Coffee and snacks will be served.\r\n\r\nAbstract: Dr. Gulliver noticed 140 years ago that the size of the cell\\'s nucleus is proportional to the size of the cell. In the intervening years, similar observations have been made about other, large structures that self-assemble in the cell. This raises a fascinating question: How does the cell, which is micrometers in length, measure its size with nothing more at its disposal than nanometer-sized proteins that diffuse, on occasion bump into each other, and transiently stick together? In this talk I will describe quantitative experiments and related theory that reveal general principles of how cells control the size of their internal structures. The case of self-assembly of actin cables in budding yeast is particularly interesting in this context, as it provides an example of a structure whose size is well matched to the size of the cell. In addition, enhancer disruption in vivo often has surprisingly weak phenotypic consequences. I will present machine learning (ML) methods (gkm-SVM and DNN) which we use to learn the complex transcription factor combinations that control enhancer activity and cell fate. I will then use these methods to develop a quantitative model for enhancer activity which shows that while promoter knockdown has robust effects on target gene expression, individual enhancer knockdown is often weaker and affects temporal transition dynamics, but not the final steady state. Our labs have been actively engaged in chemically characterizing the metabolites produced by Aspergillus species using genome mining approaches. This talk will present our recent data characterizing secondary metabolites in the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. I will also introduce our new sustainability efforts in developing polyethylene and polystyrene substrates as sole carbon sources for filamentous fungi. We have been able to produce fungal natural products using plastics retrieved from the Great Pacific Garbage patch.\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker:\r\nClay C.C. Wang, Ph.D.\r\nDepartment Chair and Professor\r\nDepartment of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences\r\nUniversity of Southern California\r\n\r\nClay Wang is a professor at the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry.\r\n\r\nWang received his BA in chemistry from Harvard University in 1996 and a PhD in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 2001. After completing a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry and chemical engineering at Stanford University, he joined the faculty in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at USC as an assistant professor in 2003.\r\n\r\nHis research program focuses on the interface of chemistry and biological sciences. Specifically, his lab has been studying the use of Aspergillus nidulans as a general host for the production of fungal natural products. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nSoils contain the most diverse community of organisms in terrestrial ecosystems, with essential roles in nutrient cycling and food-web dynamics. Human-induced disturbances remain a significant threat to the structure and functioning of soil food webs, yet our understanding of how they respond to environmental change is limited. I present two examples (i.e., plant invasion and resource subsidies) of how environmental change can influence soil food web dynamics. First, I show how garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata)\u2014a widespread North American plant invader\u2014affects soil food webs by altering fungal composition and biomass. In a second example, I show how aquatic insect subsidies can affect subarctic food webs by adding novel resources, resulting in increased microbial activity, litter decomposition, and plant biomass. Together these two examples illustrate that soil food webs are highly sensitive to resource changes in the environment, leading to shifts in ecosystem processes and plant community
