Everything is on fire. The supports disabled people need for survival are being decimated. The robots are coming after us, harvesting our data, surveilling us, and determining who is worthy to live. What can we do? How might the wisdom of disability elders and cross-movement organizers equip us for what’s happening and what’s to come? This roundtable brings together disability culture workers, activists, writers, and scholars to think-together about disability futures.

All are welcome and we strongly encourage undergraduate and graduate students to attend.

Advance registration is recommended.

Register to attend on Zoom: https://myumi.ch/G2qgm

Meet the Panelists

Beza Merid is an Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Racial Justice in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) at Arizona State University. Merid is also the Director of the Digital Health and Racial Justice Lab, an affiliated faculty member in the ASU College of Health Solutions, a 2025 Research Affiliate in the DISCO Network, and a Faculty Research Affiliate in the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center. Situated within the fields of science and technology studies (STS) and critical digital health studies, his research examines how innovative digital health technologies are used to govern, foster, and optimize our capacity for life, and it considers how this capacity is undermined when these technologies surveil, racialize, and otherwise marginalize already-vulnerable patient groups.

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha (they/them) is a nonbinary femme disabled writer and disability and transformative justice movement worker of Burgher and Tamil Sri Lankan, Irish and Ukrainian/Galician/Roma ascent. They are the author or co-editor of ten books, including The Future Is DIsabled: Prophecies, Love Notes and Mourning Songs, Beyond Survival: Stories and Strategies from the Transformative Justice Movement (co-edited with Ejeris Dixon), Tonguebreaker, and Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice. A Lambda and Jeanne Córdova Award winner, five-time Publishing Triangle shortlister and longtime disabled QTBIPOC space maker, they are currently building Living Altars, a cultural space by and for disabled QTBIPOC writers.

Christa Teston, Ph.D. is Professor of English in the Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy program at Ohio State University. Teston mobilizes multiple methods to study how people navigate uncertainty in technoscientific and biomedical contexts. Her first book, Bodies in Flux: Scientific Methods for Negotiating Medical Uncertainty, was published by University of Chicago Press in 2017 and won two national best book awards. Her second book, Doing Dignity: Ethical Praxis and the Politics of Care, was published in 2024 by Johns Hopkins University Press and draws on analyses of three case studies about how in/dignities emerge in contemporary caretaking contexts. Teston also directs Ohio State University’s business, professional, and technical writing courses and serves as the President of the Rhetoric of Health and Medicine Society.

The Cyborg Jillian Weise is a poet, novelist, video artist and disability rights activist. Cy is an Associate Professor of English at Florida State University. During the pandemic, Cy started Borg 4 Borg Productions with the video play A Kim Deal Party. Her memoir and book of poems are forthcoming from Ecco.

Meet the Moderator

M. Remi Yergeau (they/them/theirs) is an associate professor in Communication and Media Studies. Their scholarly interests include critical disability studies, rhetoric, digital studies, trans and queer studies, and neurodiversity. Yergeau is an autistic academic. Their knowledge of the autistic internet is informed by the scholarly and the personal: they once ran a neurodiversity blog, led a student chapter of an autistic-led org, and coordinated local protests. Their book, Authoring Autism: On Rhetoric and Neurological Queerness (Duke UP), is a winner of the 2017 Modern Language Association First Book Prize, the 2019 CCCC Lavender Rhetorics Book Award for Excellence in Queer Scholarship, and the 2019 Rhetoric Society of America Book Award.

We want to make our events accessible to all participants.
This panel brings together Black feminist scholars, writers, and public intellectuals to examine how and why debates about gender, sexuality, and nationality consistently emerge as top topics on social media platforms within Black discursive communities. How do algorithms and influencer culture contribute to sowing discontent and misinformation among Black social media users? We consider the social and political implications, who ultimately benefits from these conversations, and how we can make different choices around our own engagement and participation.

All are welcome and we strongly encourage undergraduate and graduate students to attend. Coffee, tea, and desserts from Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant will be provided to all attendees.

Advance registration is recommended:

Register to attend in person: https://myumi.ch/mRXXg
Register to attend on Zoom: https://myumi.ch/jJrrz

Meet the Panelists

Brooklyne Gipson (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers University - New Brunswick. Gipson is an interdisciplinary scholar whose areas of research include digital and social media environments, Black feminist digital/technology studies, and the intersection of race, gender, social media, and power. Her current research takes an intersectional approach to analyzing how anti-Black discourses manifest themselves in everyday discursive exchanges within Black social media spaces

Jamilah Lemieux is a leading millennial feminist thinker, social influencer, and game-changing media maverick. A renowned cultural critic and writer with a focus on issues of race, gender, and sexuality, Lemieux’s written work has been featured via a host of print and digital platforms, including the LA Times, the Nation, Essence, Playboy, the Cut, the Guardian, Colorlines, the Washington Post, Wired, Self, Inverse, Refinery 29, the Columbia Journalism Review, and the New York Times. She penned the foreword for the 2015 anniversary of Michele Wallace's Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman and the 2017 re-release of Ann Petry’s Miss Muriel and Other Stories.

AE Stevenson is Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. She is currently working on her book manuscript where, through an analysis of Vine, TikTok, Instagram's The Shade Room, and "blackfishing," she argues that Black women and girls have fundamentally changed the visual language of the Internet. She has published in Feminist Media Histories and Catalyst.

Meet the Moderator

Catherine Knight Steele is an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Maryland - College Park and was the Founding Director of the Andrew W. Mellon funded African American Digital Humanities Initiative (AADHum). Her research focuses on race, gender, and media, with a specific emphasis on African American culture and discourse in traditional and new media. She examines representations of marginalized communities in the media and how groups resist oppression and utilize online technology to create spaces of community.

We want to make our events accessible to all participants.
Abstract:
As Americans increasingly turn to social media for news, they face political information environments that are overwhelmingly crowded, emotional, and lack epistemic hierarchies of informational sources. This has wide reaching consequences for politics when it comes to issues like misinformation and polarization, but it is also changing public perceptions of what news media are and challenging traditional understanding of the role of news media in democracies. Using panel survey data from 2020 and 2024, we examine two seemingly contradictory phenomenon: how information abundance can lead to news avoidance and how strong emotional reactions to politics can lead to disengagement. Together, these studies highlight how social media may be shaping both how Americans define news and how they engage with it in the contemporary political information environment.

Bio:
Ariel Hasell is an Associate Professor of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. Broadly, her research examines how the contemporary media environment influences exposure to information about science and politics, the effects of that exposure on knowledge and beliefs, as well as public engagement with science and politics in society.

Meeting ID: 929 6502 5837
Passcode: 770619
For the survival of all our ecologies, we must refuse human centricity and build networks of care across lines of species and liveliness. This talk stitches a line from trans people to an expanded conception of trans, using a focus on trans ecological poetics to go beyond a focus on the human. I broaden the operation of “trans” in trans media studies to include non-human movements, such as those made by animals, viruses, and movements across the boundaries between different environments. Trans media studies can extend the fields of media studies, transgender studies, and trans of color studies to connect more deeply to and through non-human entities. Still, any injunction for queer and trans studies to go beyond the human must reconcile with the history of trans, Palestinian, Black, and Indigenous people being deemed less than human. In this talk, I use the method of algorithmic analysis proposed in my book *Poetic Operations: Trans of Color Art in Digital Media* (Duke UP, 2022) to explore the operations that make up the poetics of three contemporary artworks—*Sin Sol* (2020), an augmented reality installation I created with the Critical Realities Studio, *Acoustic Ocean* (2018), a short film by Ursula Biemann and “Of Whales”, a film created using virtual reality created by Wu Tsang.

micha cárdenas, PhD, MFA, is an artist, author and Professor of Critical Race & Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is the director of the Critical Realities Studio. Her debut novel* Atoms Never Touch* (AK Press 2023) imagines trans latina love crossing multiple quantum realities. Her academic monograph P*oetic Operations : Trans of Color Art in Digital Media* (Duke UP 2022) was the co-winner of the Gloria Anzaldúa Book Prize in 2022 from the National Women’s Studies Association “for groundbreaking monographs in women’s studies that makes significant multicultural feminist contributions to women of color/transnational scholarship”. cárdenas was a winner of the 2022 Anonymous Was a Woman artist award. She is currently working on her next academic monograph* After Man: Trans Ecologies and Climate Justice*, as well as *The Probability Engine*, a multi-disciplinary artwork imagining futures of climate justice. She is a first generation Colombian American.

We strive to make our events accessible to all participants. This will be a virtual event held in an online meeting space.
The insidious legacy of eugenics lives on in the techno-surveillance, algorithmic authoritarianism, and data-driven discrimination of Big Tech. This talk illuminates the throughline between the 19th century's anti-immigration and eugenics movements and our sprawling systems of techno-surveillance and algorithmic discrimination. I'll address how the AI-driven and market-based models of Big Tech are built on data that exploit women, immigrant groups, and other minoritized populations, amplifying social hierarchies and AI's predictions of majoritarian outcomes as the most probable and “ideal” futures. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This talk explains how it happened and how we can fight back.

Anita Say Chan, PhD (she/her) is a scholar and educator dedicated to feminist and decolonial approaches to technology. She is a Professor of Information Sciences and Media, and founder of the Community Data Clinic at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her latest book, Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future, was published in 2025 with U. of California Press.
We strive to make our events accessible to all participants.

This event will be a hybrid event with both a physical meeting space and an online meeting space.

Please register in advance for the online Zoom Webinar here: https://myumi.ch/W6rkm

Please register for the physical meeting space at the University of Michigan’s Central Campus: https://myumi.ch/qZ7g3

CART will be provided.
