The Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan warmly invites you to a book discussion on the first book in the series "Greek / Modern Intersections," (edited by Artemis Leontis, published by U Michigan Press).

C.P. Cavafy’s poetry explored the conditions for animating the past and making lost worlds or people haunt the present. Yet he also described himself as “a poet of the future generations.” Indeed, his writings address concerns and desires that permeate the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. How does poetry concerned with the past, memory, loss, and death carry futurity? How does it haunt, and how is it haunted by, future presents?

In her book Specters of Cavafy, Maria Boletsi broaches these questions by proposing spectral poetics as a novel approach to Cavafy’s work. Drawing from theorizations of specters and haunting, she develops spectrality as a lens for revisiting Cavafy’s poetry and prose, fiction and nonfiction, as well as his poetry’s bearing on our present. By examining Cavafy’s spectral poetics, the book shows how conjurations work in his writings, and how the spectral permeates the entanglement of modernity and haunting, and of irony and affect. Boletsi also traces the afterlives of specific poems in the Western imagination since the 1990s, in Egypt’s history of debt and colonization, and in Greece during the country’s recent debt crisis.
In this online event, Maria Boletsi will talk with Will Stroebel (University of Michigan) about her new book, Cavafy, poetry and haunting.

Join this event on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96401478491, passcode: 761866.

Maria Boletsi is Endowed Professor of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she holds the Marilena Laskaridis Chair, and Associate Professor in Film and Literary Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands. She is the author of Barbarism and Its Discontents (Stanford University Press, 2013) and Specters of Cavafy (University of Michigan Press, 2024), and co-author of Barbarian: Explorations of a Western Concept in Theory, Literature and the Arts (Metzler, 2 vols; 2018/2023). She has published, among other topics, on the concepts of barbarism, spectrality, crisis, and literatures and cultures of resistance in Greece and the Mediterranean. Her latest project focuses on the concept of the weird and its mobilizations in fiction, ecology, and politics.

Will Stroebel is Assistant Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. His book, Literature's Refuge: Rewriting the Mediterranean Borderscape, has just been published by Princeton University Press.
In 1923, the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange uprooted and swapped nearly two million Christians and Muslims, “pacifying” the so-called Near East through ethnic partition and refugeehood. This imposition of borders not only uprooted peoples from their place in the world; it also displaced many of their stories from a place in world literature. In Literature’s Refuge, William Stroebel recovers and weaves together work by fugitive writers, oral storytellers, readers, copyists, editors, and translators dispersed by this massive “unmixing” of populations and the broader border logic that it set in motion. Stroebel argues that two complementary forces emerged as a template for the Eastern Mediterranean’s cultural landscape: the modern border, which reshuffled people through a system of filters and checkpoints; and modern philology, which similarly reshuffled their words and works. Philologists and publishers defined modern literature by picking apart, extracting, reformatting, or dispossessing refugee and diasporic texts across a racialized borderscape—a gray zone of semi-inclusion and semi-exclusion, semimobility and immobility.

Stroebel reaches into the chinks and crannies of this borderscape to reconstitute the rich textual geography between Greek Orthodoxy and Sunni Islam, between Greek-script, Arabic-script, and Latin-script literary traditions at the edges of Europe and the Middle East. Doing so, he offers a new methodological toolkit for rewriting the modern borderscapes of world literature.

William Stroebel is assistant professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.
The removal of the Marbles from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century became, upon their arrival in London, a topic of debate as to their ownership. No less fierce today, the debate has been regarded as the purview of museum trustees, government officials, and lawyers. A. E. Stallings, herself a long-time resident of Athens, has seen that the terms of the debate, in part set by poets such as Keats and Byron, owe much to the 19th and 20th century cultural milieus surrounding the presence of the Marbles in Britain—and their long absence from Athens.

In *Frieze Frame*, her recently published book, Stallings highlights the “strange stories and people surrounding the stones,” in the course of which she reveals the wide range of issues that the debate touches on, including “aesthetics, Classics, race theory, economics, geopolitics, [and] our shifting climate.”

A. E. Stallings is the author of three translations and five collections of poetry, for which she has received several awards. She has been a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her work appears regularly in publications of note (e.g., Poetry, The New Yorker, and The Times Literary Supplement). She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2011.",
