Mirza.

Dr. Mirza will be discussing his latest book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries (Fortress Press, 2025), which examines the appearances of Mary, mother of Jesus (Isa) in various Islamic theological and cultural contexts. Mary has been historically revered throughout the Islamic and Christian traditions. In the Qur’an, she is known by the name “Maryam.” The Islamic Mary discusses Maryam's extended history, from her scriptural mentions in the Qur’an and the traditional biographies (Sīrah) of the Prophet Muhammad, to her appearances in medieval debates on prophecy, to citations of her model virtue in Sufi discussions of piety, to her representations in art and film, to her role in modern interfaith relations, particularly between Muslims and Christians.

Dr. Mirza will be introduced by Abderrahim Er-ragragi, Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Middle East Studies and Co-organizer, Rackham Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS).

Dr. Mirza’s publisher Fortress Press is pleased to offer to talk attendees and colleagues a 30% discount code for buying the book. The code is MIRZA30, valid at FortressPress.com until January 31, 2026.

 Meet the speaker:

Dr. Younus Y. Mirza is the Founding Director of the Barzinji Institute for Global Virtual Learning at Shenandoah University, Virginia. He defended his dissertation in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Georgetown University, where he is currently a visiting researcher. He has also taught at Millsaps and Allegheny Colleges. His research focuses on the relationship between the Bible and the Qur’an and the shared stories between them. He is the author of the new book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries, co-author of the book The Bible and the Qur’an: Biblical Figures in the Islamic Tradition, and has published in journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Religion (JAAR), the Journal of Qur’anic Studies (JQS) and Islam Christian-Muslim Relations (ICMR). He has been profiled for his teaching by Interfaith America, and regularly teaches classes on the Qur’an and Bible, and Marriage and Sexuality in Islam. Dr. Mirza was recently Senior Editor of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion, and hosts the A Common Word and The Islamic Mary podcasts.

This event is brought to you by the U-M Global Islamic Studies Center.
Join us as we talk with historian Zara Anishanslin about her new book, which shares the story of three remarkable artists who risked everything to challenge British rule and shape America’s fight for independence.. She follows the intertwined journeys of Robert Edge Pine, Prince Demah, and Patience Wright—artists who boldly challenged British rule. From London to Boston, Jamaica to Paris, and Bath to Philadelphia, they risked their lives, reputations, and careers in the fight for independence. Through their stories, Anishanslin reveals a rich, transatlantic history of creativity, courage, and conviction, highlighting a legacy that has long been overlooked. This compelling history brings the Revolution to life through the eyes of those who helped shape it, offering readers a fresh perspective on the fight for freedom and the power of artistic expression.
Panelists and featured guests discuss history topics with Angela Oonk in this webinar series.

By researching and writing the life and experiences of the ambitious, charismatic Angelica Schuyler Church, Beer tells the U.S. origin story from the perspective of a woman situated at the heart of the American Revolution and the founding era.

Few women of the American Revolution have come through 250 years of US history with such clarity and color as Angelica Schuyler Church. She was Alexander Hamilton’s “saucy” sister-in-law, and the heart of Thomas Jefferson’s “charming coterie” of artists and salonnières in Paris. Her transatlantic network of important friends spanned the political spectrum of her time and place, and her astute eye and brilliant letters kept them well informed.

In telling Angelica’s story, Beer illuminates how American women have always plied influence and networks for political ends, including the making of a new nation.

Sponsored by The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan Lifelong Learning program.",

Seats are offered on a first come, first served basis; please arrive early to secure a spot.

Danielle Evans is the author of the story collections *The Office of Historical Corrections and Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self.* Her first collection won the PEN American Robert W. Bingham Prize, the Hurston-Wright award for fiction, and the Paterson Prize for fiction; her second won the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize and The Bridge Book Award and was a finalist for The Aspen Prize, The Story Prize, and The LA Times Book prize. She is a 2024 USA Artists Fellow, a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts fellow, and the winner of New Literary Project Joyce Carol Oates Prize. Her stories have appeared in magazines including *The Paris Review, A Public Space, American Short* *Fiction, and The Sewanee Review*, and have been anthologized in *The Best American Short Stories and New Stories From The South*. She is an Associate Professor in The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University and earned her MFA from The University of Iowa.

Her work is interested in the gap between what happened and how people talk about it—what gets omitted or reframed, what depends on whose version of the story is centered, and how those gaps and omissions operate in the space of an individual life, in a family, and in a country. She is particularly interested in the question of performance: when the gulf between a character’s public self and private self is an act of conscious performance, what makes a character aware that a role or performance is being demanded of them, and how performance can be both an act of resistance and an act of acquiescence, sometimes at the same time.

For any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs, please email kimjulie@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure this event is inclusive to you. The building, event space, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Diaper changing tables are available in nearby restrooms. Gender-inclusive restrooms are available on the second floor of the Museum, accessible via the stairs, or in nearby Hatcher Graduate Library (Floors 3, 4, 5, and 6). The Hatcher Library also offers a reflection room (4th Floor South Stacks), and a lactation room (Room 13W, an anteroom to the basement women's staff restroom, or Room 108B, an anteroom of the first floor women's restroom). ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request; please email kimjulie@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event, whenever possible, to allow time to arrange services.

U-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St., Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St., Ann Arbor). There is limited metered street parking on State Street and South University Avenue. The Forest Avenue Public Parking Structure (650 South Forest Ave., Ann Arbor) is five blocks away, and the parking rate is $1.20 per hour.
Panelists and featured guests discuss history topics with Clements staff in this webinar series. In this conversation, author Don James McLaughlin explores how phobia — first tied to diseases like hydrophobia (rabies) — became a flexible suffix attached to various fears and social concerns, shaping political, medical, and aesthetic thought from the colonial period through the early 20th century.

McLaughlin traces the emergence and evolution of phobia as a concept in American culture long before it became established in modern psychology. McLaughlin challenges the idea that phobia only gained prominence with late-19th-century psychiatry, showing instead that the term’s roots extend back to early American literary and medical discourses.
The Institute for Research on Women & Gender (IRWG) warmly invites you to join us for the IRWG Spring Research Symposium, taking place April 23–24. This year’s gathering is part of IRWG’s 30th anniversary celebration, guided by the theme Resistance Is Fertile.

Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of IRWG while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women, gender, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos, to marginalization, and to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral. The theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive; when rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines, institutions, and public life.

The symposium will open on the evening of April 23 with a keynote address by Dr. Brittney Cooper, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers University and founding director of the Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Lab. Dr. Cooper is the award-winning author of Eloquent Rage and Beyond Respectability and a widely recognized public intellectual whose work bridges Black feminist thought, cultural criticism, and public scholarship.",

This month, Clements Curator of Manuscripts joins in a discussion with Derek Kane O'Leary about creation of the first archives in the new United States.

Archives, the foundational resource for historical research, do not emerge from a vacuum. What materials are included in the archive, and why? Whose voices are preserved for posterity, and whose are silenced? In his book, Archival Communities: Constructing the Past in the Early United States, O’Leary takes up this crucial task for the era of the early United States, arguing that key components of America’s archives emerged from within an Atlantic world of circulating scholars, evidence, practices, and ideas. This month, historian and author of "Gettysburg Surgeons: Facing a Common Enemy in the Civil War's Deadliest Battle" Barbara Franco takes us to Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. A thousand surgeons faced an unprecedented medical catastrophe: 25,000 wounded soldiers needing immediate care with only primitive tools and their own determination to save lives.

At Gettysburg's makeshift hospitals—set up in barns, churches, and blood-soaked fields—military and civilian surgeons from both North and South worked around the clock performing life-saving operations under fire. Drawing from a decade of meticulous research, Franco reveals how these courageous medical professionals revolutionized battlefield medicine and established principles still saving lives today.",
