Her research interests are in natural language processing, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow, a AAAI Fellow, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice\/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).\r\n\r\nDr. Khalid M. Malik is a Professor of Computer Science and Director of Cybersecurity at the College of Innovation and Technology, University of Michigan\u2013Flint, and the co-founder of ProbeTruth. His research focuses on the integrated areas of AI, healthcare, and information security to design secure, intelligent, and decentralized decision support systems by employing multimodal, federated, trustworthy, and neuro-symbolic AI. In cybersecurity, his work emphasizes developing forensic examiners for assessing the authenticity, integrity, and veracity of audio, video, and image content, including deepfake detection. In healthcare, his focus includes predicting cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events using clinical text and multiple medical imaging modalities (e.g., DSA, MRA). Dr. Malik\u2019s research is supported by multiple National Science Foundation awards, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization Innovation Hub, and various local and global industry partners. He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including Oakland\u2019s Young Investigator Research Award (2018), the SECS Outstanding Research Award (2019), and the Distinguished Associate Professor Award (2021).\r\n\r\nCliff Lampe is a professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. It stresses that although AI can strengthen dialogue, enhance foresight, and support institutional coordination, its true value relies on robust human oversight and strong ethical governance.\r\n \r\n Driart Elshani is professor of information and communication technologies at the American University in Kosovo. He has contributed to multiple projects focused on leveraging information technology for development across both government and industry sectors. Professor Elshani's areas of expertise include artificial intelligence (AI), e-governance, and cybersecurity. He was educated at the University of Brussels, where he earned his Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, and PhD in information sciences and technologies. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natural language processing, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow, a AAAI Fellow, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice\/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).\r\n\r\nMosharaf Chowdhury is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he leads the SymbioticLab. His research focuses on making AI\/ML workloads more efficient, with a particular emphasis on reducing their energy consumption through the ML Energy Initiative. Major open-source projects from his team include Infiniswap, the first scalable memory disaggregation solution; FedScale, a planetary-scale AI\/ML platform; TPP, a tiered memory manager integrated into the Linux kernel (v5.18+); and Zeus, the first energy-optimal generative AI stack. Previously, Mosharaf invented the concept of coflows and was one of the original creators of Apache Spark. He has received numerous individual honors, including fellowships and paper awards from NSDI, OSDI, ATC, and MICRO.\r\n\r\nAlexandra B. Klass is the James G. Degnan Professor of Law at the University of Michigan\r\nLaw School. She teaches and writes primarily in the areas of energy law, environmental law, and natural resources law. In 2022 and 2023, she served in the Biden-Harris administration as Deputy General Counsel for Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Demonstrations at the U.S. Department of Energy. Professor Klass\u2019s recent scholarly work, published in many of the nation\u2019s leading law journals, addresses regulatory and permitting challenges to integrating more renewable energy into the nation\u2019s electric transmission grid, siting and eminent domain issues surrounding interstate electric transmission lines and oil and gas pipelines, and applications of the public trust doctrine to modern environmental law challenges. Before joining the Michigan Law faculty in 2022, Professor Klass was a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, where she was a member of the faculty from 2006 to 2022. She has been a visiting professor at Stanford Law School, Harvard Law School, Uppsala University (Sweden), and the University of Arizona Rogers College of Law. During the years of late socialism, Bulgaria developed a computer industry that commanded the export market of the Eastern Bloc. Users and states from the Inner German Border to Vladivostok, and many states in the Global South, were equipped with Bulgarian computers, drives, and tools. Developed as a prestige project by a communist party that sought a \u2018golden goose\u2019 industrial niche, the industry spawned a far-spanning vision of socialist modernity that touched on all aspects of socialist Bulgaria: from political economy and planning, to labor and gender, to children, literature, and concepts of the human-machine hybrid that was the future. The talk, based on the author\u2019s first book, will try to see what the information age looked like behind the Iron Curtain, and push back against narratives of the failure of socialism to enter the information economy. It shows an Iron Curtain that is far more porous than expected; an Eastern Bloc connected to the Global South through business dealings as well as development; and the impact of such stories on the narrative of 1989 as a convenient end point for the socialist past.\n \n Victor Petrov is a historian of the modern Balkans, with interests in the history of technology & science, the Cold War, utopian thinking and alternative knowledge communities. He is Associate Professor of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His first book, Balkan Cyberia: Cold War Computing, Bulgarian Modernization, and the Information Age Behind the Iron Curtain came out with MIT Press in 2023.
