Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Vida Maralani, Associate Professor of Sociology, Cornell University. Dr. Maralani is a sociologist and demographer who studies social inequality and how it comes about. She has topical expertise in gender, education, work outcomes, child investment, and health disparities.

Abstract: “Perceptions of discrimination based on social categories such as gender and race are an important part of understanding inequality and social stratification. This study asks two questions: (1) What types of experiences do individuals perceive as discriminatory in federal Title IX claims filed against universities, and how do these vary by gender and race? (2) Why do people perceive these experiences or interactions as discriminatory? We answer these questions using an original dataset constructed from 1,363 Title IX claims filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) between 1994 and 2014. Findings highlight how individuals interpret and contest experiences and interactions in university settings, and show how routine parts of academic life, when situated in specific contexts, can activate perceptions of discrimination in postsecondary environments.”
In this talk, based on Tamar Shirinian's recent book titled, Survival of a Perverse Nation: Morality and Queer Possibility in Armenia* (Duke University Press, 2024), I discuss the intricate links between two popular rhetorics in Armenia at the time of my research (2012-2014): aylaserutyn (sexual perversion, attributed by right wing nationalists and by mainstream media to the figuration of the homosexual, and aylandakutyun (moral perversion) attributed by residents of Yerevan (largely working class) to the figure of the oligarch. These were both, critically, moral and not necessarily political narratives that resided in a seemingly overwhelming feeling that the nation was on a perverse path toward its annihilation. According to these narratives of perversion, Armenia was missing proper Father figures both as national leadership as well as within households, leading the nation on deviant and improper paths toward becoming something other than Armenia. She locates what the politics of "No! as forms of aesthetic and stylistic refusal of these daddy politics, drawing on examples from grass roots initiatives aimed at democratic and not necessarily moral futures, and argues that rather than mourning these perverse presents lingering on the nation's survival, we might locate in them queer futures toward liberation.

Tamar R. Shirinian is a cultural anthropologist whose work explores themes of gender, sexuality, and political economy and especially their interconnectedness in the postsocialist world, focused particularly on the Republic of Armenia. Tamar's first book, *Survival of a Perverse Nation: Morality and Queer Possibility in Armenia*, which explores homosexual panic and its ties to post-Soviet crises in social reproduction, was published by Duke University Press in 2024 nd won the 2025 Ruth Benedict Award for Outstanding Monograph from the Association for Queer Anthropology. She is currently working on a second book manuscript, tentatively entitled *Yakhq and Other Feminisms from the Post-Second World*, which investigates post-Soviet ideologies and practices of feminism as well as their tensions with one another. Tamar was the co-editor of the 2018 Armenian Review special issue entitled *Queering Armenian Studies* is the editor of the forthcoming volume *Toward a Political Economy of Intimate Life: Social Reproduction Revisited* (Emerald, 2026), is working on a co-edited volume entitled *It is Possible to Cry for the Whole World: Reflections on Armenian Feminist Solidarities* (Wayne State University Press), and has published numerous articles in journals such as *Feminist Formations*, *American Ethnologist*, *Gender & Society*, *PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review*, and *Anthropology and *Humanism** amongst others. Additionally, she is the co-editor of the "Third Space" section of the *Journal of Middle East Women's Studies*, a member of the 61 Collective in Armenia, and the co-host of the *Other Armenias Podcast* (available on YouTube and Spotify).

Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us.
Progress toward gender equality in the U.S. labor market is often described as a "stalled revolution," with rapid progress in the 1980s and 1990s followed by slower change thereafter. This characterization emerges from period-based analyses. We introduce a new approach to studying occupational sex segregation, distinguishing cohort and life-cycle changes in men’s, women’s, and labor-market patterns. We find that few cohorts of women stalled in entering male-dominated occupations relative to their predecessors, and indeed the youngest cohorts show faster integration. Men’s cohort change is slower but still substantial. The combined effect is a monotonic inter-cohort decline in occupational segregation, as measured by the index of dissimilarity. Over the life cycle, women’s likelihood of entering male-dominated occupations increases steadily, while men’s follows an inverted U-pattern. Cohort and life-cycle patterns vary by parental status and education. Our findings caution against a broad “stalled revolution” narrative and highlight the need for gender inequality theories to attend to the different “clocks” underpinning social change.
Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/D8RV8

Through court cases, fiction, and late-Qing newspaper accounts, Matthew Sommer’s new book considers a range of transgender experiences in Imperial China, illuminating how certain forms of gender transgression were sanctioned in particular contexts and penalized in others. People moved away from the gender they were assigned at birth in different ways and for many reasons. Eunuchs, boy actresses, and clergy left behind normative gender roles defined by family and procreation. Anatomical males who presented as women sometimes took a conventionally female occupation such as midwife, faith healer, or even medium to a fox spirit — yet, suspected of sexual predation, they risked death for the crime of “masquerading in women’s attire,” even when they had lived peacefully in their communities for years. Sommer scrutinizes the ways authorities and literati understood gender-nonconforming people, contrasting official ideology with popular mentalities. An unprecedented account of China’s transgender histories, this book sheds new light on law, religion, medicine, literature, and culture.

Matthew H. Sommer (BA Swarthmore, MA U. of Washington, PHD UCLA) is the Bowman Family Professor of History at Stanford University. A social and legal historian of Qing dynasty China (1644-1912), his research uses original legal case records from local and central archives to explore gender, sexuality, and family. He is the author of Sex, Law, And Society in Late Imperial China (Stanford 2000) and Polyandry and Wife-Selling in Qing Dynasty China (California 2015), which was the inaugural winner of the American Society for Legal History’s Peter Gonville Stein Book Award. His latest book, The Fox Spirit, the Stone Maiden, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China (Columbia 2024) won the Boswell Prize from the LGBTQ+ History Association. Future plans include a fourth book, “Male Same-Sex Relations and Masculinity in Qing China,” and a fifth, “Criminal Procedure in Eighteenth-Century China.”
For the survival of all our ecologies, we must refuse human centricity and build networks of care across lines of species and liveliness. This talk stitches a line from trans people to an expanded conception of trans, using a focus on trans ecological poetics to go beyond a focus on the human. I broaden the operation of “trans” in trans media studies to include non-human movements, such as those made by animals, viruses, and movements across the boundaries between different environments. Trans media studies can extend the fields of media studies, transgender studies, and trans of color studies to connect more deeply to and through non-human entities. Still, any injunction for queer and trans studies to go beyond the human must reconcile with the history of trans, Palestinian, Black, and Indigenous people being deemed less than human. In this talk, I use the method of algorithmic analysis proposed in my book *Poetic Operations: Trans of Color Art in Digital Media* (Duke UP, 2022) to explore the operations that make up the poetics of three contemporary artworks—*Sin Sol* (2020), an augmented reality installation I created with the Critical Realities Studio, *Acoustic Ocean* (2018), a short film by Ursula Biemann and “Of Whales”, a film created using virtual reality created by Wu Tsang.

micha cárdenas, PhD, MFA, is an artist, author and Professor of Critical Race & Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
How does societal gender equality influence gender gaps at the individual level? Contradictory theoretical perspectives exist on this seemingly intuitive question. While social role theory and the theory of circumscription and compromise suggest that greater parity in society leads to smaller psychological differences between genders, gender-essentialist perspectives suggest the opposite. Over the last decade, a stream of cross-cultural studies supported the latter with paradoxical findings that greater societal gender equality is associated with larger, not smaller, gender differences in preferences, attitudes, and behavioral patterns at the individual level. In this talk, I discuss key limitations in previous studies and challenge the so-called “gender equality paradox” by presenting findings from multilevel modeling with data on the career interests of 21 million U.S. individuals across 50 states over a 17-year time span. I demonstrate divergence in the cross-level effects at the within- and between-state levels, with different gender equality indicators, and across various interest dimensions. This work helps reconcile conflicting theories and empirical findings and offer new and more nuanced insights into policies and interventions aiming at closing gender gaps.",
