These works, often referred to in both commercial publishing and research as \u201cborder-crossing literature,\u201d are varied in subject and style, but are loosely connected through a shared concern with the relationship between language and the self. This lecture will consider the framework that has been used to discuss border-crossing works in the broader context of Japanese literature, as well as how that framework is changing as the field continues to grow and diversify.\r\n \r\n Gregory Khezrnejat is an Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Literature at the Hosei University Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies. His research is focused on transnational elements of modern and contemporary Japanese literature as well as second-language authorship. In 2021, his debut novel *Kamogawa Runner* was awarded the Kyoto Literature Award.
