        "description":"We develop different models to study the flutter of membranes (of zero bending rigidity) with vortex-sheet wakes in two- and three-dimensional inviscid flows. For 2D flows, we use a nonlinear, time-stepping method to study large-amplitude dynamics in the space of three dimensionless parameters: membrane pretension, mass density, and stretching rigidity. With a linearized version of the membrane-vortex-sheet model we also investigate the instability of a membrane by solving a nonlinear eigenvalue problem iteratively, for three boundary conditions---both ends fixed, one end fixed and one free, and both free. We further consider a simple physical setup: a membrane held by tethers with hinged ends, that interpolates between the fixed--fixed and free--free cases. We additionally study an infinite membrane model mounted on a periodic array of Hookean springs. This model allows us to compute asymptotic scaling laws for how the frequencies, growth rates, and eigenmodes depend on membrane pretension and mass density. Finally, we develop a nonlinear model and computational method to study large-amplitude membrane flutter in 3D inviscid flow for 12 different boundary conditions.",

        "description":"Title: Morality is skin deep: Linking aesthetic and moral cognition in the brain.\r\n\r\nAbstract: Facial beauty is linked to a \u201cbeauty-is-good\u201d stereotype, whereby people expect positive character traits in people with attractive faces. We find evidence for a complementary \u201canomalous-is-bad\u201d stereotype, which facilitates negative biases against people with visible facial differences like scars and palsies. This evidence is found at multiple levels of organization: At the level of the brain, people show a specific neural response to anomalous faces in the amygdala. At the level of attitudes, people make negative character evaluations about individuals with facial anomalies, are explicitly biased against them as a group, and misjudge their expressions of facial affect to be more negative than they actually are. These negative attitudinal biases are detectable regardless of the kind of facial anomaly. At the level of behavior, less prosociality is detected towards individuals with visible facial differences compared to typical faces in people with the most to give. Across levels of organization, the specific amygdala response to facial anomalies is associated with stronger just-world beliefs (i.e., people get what they deserve), less trait empathic concern, and less prosociality elicited by anomalous faces. Data collected from the Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania suggests the anomalous-is-bad stereotype is learned, rather than emerging from an adaptive aversion to pathogen threat. In a recent study, we tested the hypothesis that implicit biases towards people with visible facial differences can be unlearned through routine exposure to faces bearing such anomalous features. Participants\u2019 implicit biases were measured before and after they completed an exposure intervention, which was delivered remotely using a custom mobile phone application. Our findings suggest that exposure to people with facial anomalies, especially exposure that elicits perspective taking, can reduce negative biases towards them in a targeted fashion.",

        "description":"Continuing from last week\u2019s talk by Saket, the seminar will take a close look at K3 surfaces (but no knowledge from last week\u2019s talk will be assumed). K3 surfaces enjoy some nice cohomological properties and relatively simple deformation theories even in the positive characteristic setting. There are moreover multiple Torelli theorems that are known in this setting, which may be surprising since characteristic 0 Torelli theorems are usually phrased in terms of Hodge theory. In one version, called crystalline Torelli theorem, the use of Hodge structures is replaced by their rough characteristic p analogue--F-crystals which arise from crystalline cohomology. The current plan of the talk is to sketch some general landscape of K3 surfaces and their cohomologies in positive characteristic, without getting into Torelli theorems.",

        "description":"We will discuss how the representation theory of $PGL(d, F)$ assists in analyzing functions and operators on the associated Bruhat-Tits building (or quotients thereof). There is a certain natural algebra of functions on the group called the spherical Hecke algebra whose action on the building has a nice geometric interpretation and whose representations parametrize so-called ``spherical representations'' of $PGL(d, F)$. The spherical Hecke algebra acting on the building has certain particularly nice eigenfunctions called spherical functions which allow one to define a sort of ``Fourier transform'' on the building. In the case of $PGL(2, F)$, these topics are closely related to analyzing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the adjacency operator on regular graphs\/the infinite regular tree. This talk is somewhat of a continuation of last week's talk, but it will be fairly independent from that talk and it's not necessary to have attended that talk to follow this one.",
