Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101, 201, 401, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester, and Arabic 102, 202, 402, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* The Summer Language Institute (June & July) offers intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102, combined), Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202, combined), and Arabic 401 & 402.About the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic, if they have no background in Arabic, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test, please contact the program director at, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.
An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons, 4th Floor Atrium, February 13 - March 10.

About the Artist:
James Charles Morris (b. 1984), is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography, collage, painting, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race, spirituality, history, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown, which is evident in his work.

Morris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother, Dell Pryor, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans, Hugh Grannum, Lester Sloan, Al Loving, Gilda Snowden, Shirley Woodson, Anthony Barboza, and Eric Pryor among others.

In 2008, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit), a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society.

In 2019, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage, photo montage, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works, that have engaged many within the artistic community.
The Egalitarian Metropolis: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit

The Great Black Migration to Detroit occurred at the height of the city’s industrial dominance, and yet the result was a deeply divided metropolis where almost all the benefits of subsequent industrial restructuring flowed to white suburbanites and almost all the costs were borne by Black city residents. Today’s Detroit might be more challenged economically, yet paradoxically the chances for an inclusive recovery and a more egalitarian metropolis might be greater. Detroit and Detroit-like cities have the possibility of restructuring to deliver greater equity for their residents than other metros hampered by high housing costs and issues associated with infrastructure, transportation, and education, among other pressing concerns. But can Detroit overcome its racial and economic divisions to become a more egalitarian metropolis?

SESSION 1: FROM A DIVIDED TO AN INCLUSIVE METROPOLIS
Location: Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning
Date: Tuesday, March 7, 2023
Time: 11:30am - 1:30pm, lunch included

SESSION 2: CONFRONTING THE PRODUCTION OF DECLINE
Location: University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School
Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2023
Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm, reception to immediately follow

SESSION 3: FROM THE PRODUCTION OF DECLINE TO THE PRODUCTION OF EQUITY
Location: University of Michigan Detroit Center
Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm, lunch included

SESSION 4: TOWARDS A CULTURE OF INCLUSION
Location: ArcPrep - Michigan Research Studio
Date: Friday, March 17, 2023
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm, lunch included

SESSION 5: CLOSING CONVERSATION
Location: Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning
Date: Saturday, March 18, 2023
Time: 2:00pm - 4:30pm, reception to immediately follow

*all sessions will be live-streamed, registration will be required.
The Egalitarian Metropolis: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit

The Great Black Migration to Detroit occurred at the height of the city’s industrial dominance, and yet the result was a deeply divided metropolis where almost all the benefits of subsequent industrial restructuring flowed to white suburbanites and almost all the costs were borne by Black city residents. Today’s Detroit might be more challenged economically, yet paradoxically the chances for an inclusive recovery and a more egalitarian metropolis might be greater. Detroit and Detroit-like cities have the possibility of restructuring to deliver greater equity for their residents than other metros hampered by high housing costs and issues associated with infrastructure, transportation, and education, among other pressing concerns. But can Detroit overcome its racial and economic divisions to become a more egalitarian metropolis?

SESSION 1: FROM A DIVIDED TO AN INCLUSIVE METROPOLIS
Location: Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning
Date: Tuesday, March 7, 2023
Time: 11:30am - 1:30pm, lunch included

SESSION 2: CONFRONTING THE PRODUCTION OF DECLINE
Location: University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School
Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2023
Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm, reception to immediately follow

SESSION 3: FROM THE PRODUCTION OF DECLINE TO THE PRODUCTION OF EQUITY
Location: University of Michigan Detroit Center
Date: Thursday, March 16, 2023
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm, lunch included

SESSION 4: TOWARDS A CULTURE OF INCLUSION
Location: ArcPrep - Michigan Research Studio
Date: Friday, March 17, 2023
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm, lunch included

SESSION 5: CLOSING CONVERSATION
Location: Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning
Date: Saturday, March 18, 2023
Time: 2:00pm - 4:30pm, reception to immediately follow

*all sessions will be live-streamed, registration will be required.",

For many of the staff, this unique work becomes personal. During this interactive presentation, Director of Education Amber Mitchell will discuss how her journey as a descendant and public historian combine to create experiences that encourage learners to listen, think, communicate, and activate.
This session is sponsored by Rackham’s Mellon Public Engagement and the Humanities program and is open to all students on campus interested in the topic.
Bio: Amber N. Mitchell is the director of education at the Whitney Plantation, a memorial site in South Louisiana that is exclusively dedicated to interpreting the story of slavery in the United States. As a public historian, Amber strives to tell the stories of underrepresented peoples in cultural institutions and transform cultural and historical institutions into accessible reflections of our communities. Before joining the Whitney staff, Amber worked at the National WWII Museum, the American Association for State and Local History, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Detroit Historical Society. She holds a master’s degree in history from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/Gk1Gn.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events.
