In the intervening years, similar observations have been made about other, large structures that self-assemble in the cell. This raises a fascinating question: How does the cell, which is micrometers in length, measure its size with nothing more at its disposal than nanometer-sized proteins that diffuse, on occasion bump into each other, and transiently stick together? In this talk I will describe quantitative experiments and related theory that reveal general principles of how cells control the size of their internal structures. The case of self-assembly of actin cables in budding yeast is particularly interesting in this context, as it provides an example of a structure whose size is well matched to the size of the cell. His aim is to explore how the voluminous texts and magisterial works that issued from Tibet\u2019s political center might illuminate broader sociocultural trends in early modern Tibet. He will suggest that one of the defining features of political action in this era was the emphasis placed on material and intellectual productivity. This emphasis resonated with core ideals of political rule that found articulation in Buddhist cosmological terms. Situating Tibetan texts and works in this way may give us purchase on the larger question of just what it means to speak of this political project as a \u201cBuddhist state.\u201d\r\n \r\n Ian MacCormack is the Khyentse Lecturer in Buddhist Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he teaches courses on religion and Asian studies.
