Abstract is forthcoming.

Bio:
As the Vice President of R&D - Biologics, Dr. Lakmal Jayasinghe oversees all biological research and development projects at Oxford Nanopore. Lakmal joined ONT in 2006 after finishing his PhD in chemical biology in the University of Oxford. During his PhD in the Hagan Bayley group, Lakmal has studied different nanopores and has gained a wealth of knowledge in engineering nanopores using genetic and chemical approaches. His responsibilities at ONT include improving the readout signal of ONT platforms by upgrading its current nanopore reader and motor, as well as discovering new versions of nanopores, motors and chemistries to suit various ONT applications including protein sequencing. Lakmal also works with many academic collaborators across the world to ensure that Oxford Nanopore uses the best possible biological components and chemistries in its platforms.

https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09",

I focus on Symonds' recollections about living in fear of being discovered and publicly humiliated, and I argue that queer anxiety is a structure of feeling constitutive of the homosexual closet. Examining his correspondence with Havelock Ellis and Richard von Krafft-Ebing, I reveal that Symonds theorized his affective life and developed a notion of the cultural origins of queer anxiety. With this, he sought to challenge the psychiatric definitions of homosexual neurosis as a congenital condition and dispute the scientific theories of homosexuality as illness. His autotheoretical contributions, however, were dismissed by sexologists as subjective inferences inadmissible to scientific epistemologies: as the object of the medical gaze, the anxious homosexual could speak, but he could never have the last word.
Robert Vaught conjectured that the number of countable models of any given list of axioms must be either countable or continuum, but never in between. Despite all the work that has gone into this conjecture over the past sixty years, it remains open. It is one of the most well-known, long-standing open questions in mathematical logic. We introduce the omega-Vaught's conjecture, a strengthening of Vaught's conjecture for infinitary logic. We believe that a structural proof of Vaught's conjecture for infinitary logic would actually be a proof of the omega-Vaught's conjecture. Furthermore, a counterexample to the omega-Vaught's conjecture would likely contain ideas helpful in constructing a counterexample to Vaught's conjecture.

We prove the omega-Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings, a strengthening of Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings originally proved by Steel. The proof notably differs from Steel's proof (and any other previously known proof of Vaught's conjecture for linear orderings) in that it makes no appeal to lemmas from higher computability theory or descriptive set theory.

In this talk I will assume minimal background knowledge on Vaught's conjecture and spend some time going over the needed foundational information. Through this discussion, we will naturally arrive at the definition of the omega-Vaught's conjecture and I will explain some of the main tools used in the linear order proof. I will focus on highlighting a concrete, plausible, potential path to a proof of Vaught's conjecture.

This talk is based on joint work with Antonio Montalban.",

He was chair of the voice department at Lawrence University, where he received two awards for excellence in teaching. He was awarded the Van Lawrence Fellowship by the Voice Foundation in 1994 for his interest in voice science and pedagogy. His former students have sung with Houston Grand, Boston Lyric, Opera Colorado, Washington, Wolf Trap, Seattle, Deutsche Oper Berlin, San Francisco, New York City Opera, the Metropolitan, and Santa Fe Opera. He has authored two important books on vocal resonance, Practical Vocal Acoustics and Kinesthetic Voice Pedagogy. He gives master classes and workshops throughout the world.
A graduate of the University of Arizona, Joanne Bozeman has been a singing teacher for 47 years. She was a faculty member at Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music for 26 of those years, where she taught studio voice and a number of voice-related and singing diction courses. Her students have been winners in the NATS Auditions and other competitions, and many have continued on to excellent graduate programs and performing careers. Others have become singing teachers, choral directors, music educators, and speech and language pathologists. In addition to her career as a singing teacher, she performed frequently in recital, concert and oratorio. Now retired from academia and professional singing, she continues to be engaged with the voice community as a teacher and frequent presenter on the relationship of female voice and hormones. She recently co-authored the highly acclaimed book, Singing Through Change.
The 2023 Annual Copernicus Lecture will feature two presentations on how JCC Krakow has organized volunteers to aid Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland. Following the presentations, the two speakers will join a conversation led by CCPS Director Geneviève Zubrzycki.

"In the Shadow of Auschwitz: How JCC Krakow is Rebuilding Jewish Life in Poland and Supporting Ukrainian Refugees"

JCC Krakow (est.2008) is the vibrant center of reborn Jewish life in Kraków, with over 850 members. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it quickly morphed into one of Kraków’s most important humanitarian aid centers, providing services to over 150,000 Ukrainian refugees to date. In this talk, JCC Krakow CEO Jonathan Ornstein will discuss the center's mission to rebuild Jewish communal life in the shadow of Auschwitz, and the impact of the Jewish community’s work with Ukrainian refugees.

"Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland"

In April and June 2022, at the invitation of JCC Krakow, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is tikkun olam, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. Fishman will discuss his experience and the accompanying exhibit--on display in Weiser Hall in March and April--that shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.

Jonathan Ornstein is the Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Community Centre of Krakow. The JCC boasts over 850 Jewish members, welcomes 10,000 visitors a month and has become one of Poland’s most visible signs of Jewish revival. Ornstein created the annual Ride For The Living and Holocaust Survivor Day, two global initiatives with tens of thousands of participants. Prior to occupying his post at the JCC, Ornstein lectured in Modern Hebrew at Jagiellonian University, founded the “Gesher” association for Polish-Israeli dialogue, and is a founding member of the Krakow Association of Christians and Jews where he serves as vice president.

In his 45-year career, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland, begun in 1975, continues to the present day.Fishman’s work has been extensively published, exhibited, and collected worldwide, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time, Life, Fortune, Newsweek, The London Sunday Times, The Economist* and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery; the United Nations; POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries, to name a few, as well as private and corporate collections.",
