Jamil Zaki
Thursday, March 23, 2023
2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET
Free, registration required to obtain login information

Event link:
https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/the-war-for-kindness-building-empathy-in-a-fractured-world/

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
Empathy is in short supply. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even thirty years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States was suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things seem to have only become worse—but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Join us for a virtual fireside chat with Stanford University Professor Jamil Zaki as he discusses his groundbreaking book, The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World, with host Ethan Kross. You’ll learn about Zaki’s cutting-edge research, including experiments from his lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait—something we’re born with or not—but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort. Zaki will share stories of people who embody this new perspective, fighting for kindness in the most difficult of circumstances. And you will learn ways to work on and build your own empathy—the same way you’d strengthen a muscle.

About Zaki:
Jamil Zaki is a tenured associate professor of psychology at Stanford University. His research spans a number of domains, including social influence, prosocial behavior, and especially empathy (see Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory for details). He has pioneered a new perspective on empathy as a learnable skill, and much of his work focuses on training individuals, groups, and organizations to empathize more effectively.

Dr. Zaki received his BA in cognitive neuroscience from Boston University and his PhD in psychology from Columbia University and conducted postdoctoral research at the Harvard Center for Brain Science. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles and received research and teaching awards from the Social and Affective Neuroscience Society, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, the Society for Neuroscience, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, Harvard University, and Stanford University. In 2019 he was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the U.S. Government’s highest honor for researchers at his career stage.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Zaki is active in outreach and public communication of science. He has written for outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, and The New Yorker. In 2019, he published his first book, The War for Kindness, which NPR called a “wide-ranging, practical guide to making the world better.”

Host:
Ethan Kross, Faculty Associate, Center for Positive Organizations; Professor of Psychology and Management & Organizations, University of Michigan

Series Sponsors:
The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center, Tauber Institute for Global Operations, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2022-23 Positive Links Speaker Series.

Series Promotional Partners:
Additionally, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.
How do I turn this never-ending tangle of literature into a neat, polished review? In this interactive workshop, we'll cover laying the foundation for your scholarly literature review and then taking that first critical step towards composition. We'll crowdsource tips for generating a source list, organizing it as you go, and starting to extract themes and ideas for section headings from your reading library. We'll also cover the basics of structure to reduce the barrier for writing your first sections. Whether you're halfway through or just starting out, you'll have a chance to take the next step on organizing, defining your purpose, or revising your argumentation. This presentation will focus on reviews in the sciences, but concepts are generalizable to all literature reviews.

Presenter: Jimmy Brancho, Sweetland Center for Writing

Register at https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/12029

Rackham / Sweetland Workshops, co-sponsored by the Rackham Graduate School, cover a host of topics designed to help graduate students in various aspects of writing.",

I do have hope. To face the realities of our lives is not a reason for despair—despair is a tool of your enemies. Facing the realities of our lives gives us motivation for action. For you are not powerless.”

Highlighting some of this powerful resistance, this event builds on the Spark series, "Living an LGBTQIA2+ Life: Enacting Health Justice for a Flourishing Future." The panel will discuss some of the many ways that LGBTQIA2+ people:

leverage the strengths of their identities and communities to center their mental health and wellbeing;
thrive within their interpersonal relationships and family lives; and,
experience immense joy, pleasure and delight.

We hope this event will spark something in you, some curiosity to start new conversations with those around you about how to better support and resource LGBTQIA2+ people during this time of global trauma from war, climate disasters, food apartheid, a pandemic, and anti-Black, anti-LGBTQIA+, and xenophobic legislation. Ultimately, we hope you leave ready to work with us to chart a path toward a new, flourishing future.

Start now by registering to attend this event, and then continue the conversation through June with The Sexploration Project team as they convene community members, advocates, providers, and scholars for a series of follow-up roundtable discussions.

Confirmed Speakers:
- David B.
This paper proposes a novel finite-state Markov chain approximation method for Markov processes with continuous support. The method can be used for both uni- and multivariate processes, as well as non-stationary processes such as those with a life-cycle component. The method is based on minimizing the information loss between a misspecified approximating model and the true data generating process. In contrast to existing methods, we provide both an optimal grid and transition probability matrix. We provide guidance on how to select the optimal number of grid points. The method outperforms existing methods in several dimensions, including parsimoniousness. We compare the performance of our method to existing methods through the lens of an asset-pricing model, and a life-cycle consumption-savings model. We find the choice of the discretization method matters for the accuracy of the model solutions, the welfare costs of risk, and the amount of wealth inequality a life-cycle model can generate.
Ukrainians have responded to Russia's aggression against their country in consequential ways. In her presentation, Greta Uehling will discuss the highly conscious and creative ways non-combatants engage in what she calls "everyday war." Based on her ethnographic research in Ukraine, Uehling will describe how this everyday war prompted moral thinking about human vulnerabilities. She will explore the improvised ethics of care that arise in a context in which moral rules and international humanitarian law have been upended. Uehling’s recently released book and her talk will demonstrate the insights that can be gained when studies of war and conflict include consideration of families, friendships, and subjective experience.

Greta Uehling is a cultural anthropologist whose current project explores the subjective experience of military conflict in Ukraine. In 2014, Uehling received a Fulbright scholar grant that enabled her to do ethnographic fieldwork over three summers in Ukraine and lead to the publication of "Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine" (Cornell University Press, 2023). The book bridges the fields of anthropology, international relations, political geography, and peace and conflict studies. A CREES faculty associate, Uehling teaches for the Program in International and Comparative Studies and Anthropology at the University of Michigan.

This lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/1AgeV.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.
