Based on analyses of almost 30 years of election survey data, I show how the two parties have sharply diverged on the core trait of authoritarianism. The relationship between authoritarianism and vote choice has increased substantially over time. Perhaps more importantly, authoritarianism has become more strongly related to partisan identification which has long-term implications for political conflict. This phenomenon is also present in several other nations in both the developing and the developed world. In response, several non-profit organizations have emerged with training programs designed to select and train a new class of political leaders. But whether this response by civil society can succeed in renewing the political class remains uninvestigated. In this paper, we evaluate the largest non-profit, non-partisan training program for aspiring politicians in Brazil. Using a judge-specific regression discontinuity design, we estimate the effects of the program on aspirants deciding to run and, conditional on running, on their electoral performance during the 2020 local elections. We find that the program increased the likelihood that the aspirant ran for office, and that it led to modest improvements in their campaign funds and vote shares. We do not, however, find any evidence that these aspirants are more likely to get elected suggesting that the program has yet to have any meaningful impact on Brazil\u2019s political selection. Walters is a Creative Capital Awardee in literary nonfiction and the author of a book of prose, *Multiply\/Divide: On the American Real and Surreal* (Sarabande Books, 2015), named a best book of the year by *Buzzfeed*, *Flavorwire*, *Literary Hub*, *The Root*, *Huffington Post*, and others. She is also the author of two books of poems, *Troy, Michigan* (Futurepoem, 2014) and *Longer I Wait, More You Love Me*. Her work has been published in BOMB, *The Yale Review*, *The Iowa Review*, *Lapham\u2019s Quarterly*, *Full Bleed*, and *Harper\u2019s*, among many others. Her current projects address intersections between writing and design. climate change and its reverberations, class and racial disquietude in the industrial Midwest, and organic forms in the essay.\r\n\r\nA recipient of fellowships from NYFA, the Ford Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institute, she has a broad history of engagements with writing in and about performative contexts. She was artist-in-residence at BRIClab in Brooklyn, where she worked on developing the book for the opera, Golden Motors with Derek Bermel. Their lyrical work has been performed widely, including at Carnegie Hall, Joe\u2019s Pub, Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst in Denmark, The Institute for Advanced Study, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. In a sustained collaboration with curator Elyse Nelson, Walters co-curated the exhibition, Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast, at The Met, on view from March 10, 2022 to March 5, 2023. It is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery, colonialism, and empire. Together they have edited a collection of essays as a companion to the show, titled *Fictions of Emancipation: Reconsidering Carpeaux\u2019s Why Born Enslaved!* (The Met\/Yale University Press).\r\n\r\nWalters holds a MFA\/PHD in Poetry and Literature from Cornell University, and is the former Associate Dean of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons, The New School. The documentary is designed for a live audience, complete with individual headphones for each audience member to better immerse themselves in the film\u2019s soundscapes, and features live narration by Sam Green.\nSam Green (director, writer, editor) is a New York-based documentary filmmaker. Green\u2019s most recent live documentaries include A Thousand Thoughts (with the Kronos Quartet) (2018), The Measure of All Things (2014), The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller (with Yo La Tengo) (2012), and Utopia in Four Movements (2010). With all of these works, Green narrates the film in-person while musicians perform a live soundtrack. Green\u2019s 2004 feature-length film, The Weather Underground, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, was nominated for an Academy Award, included in the Whitney Biennial, and has screened widely around the world. \n \nJD Samson (composer) is best known as leader of the band MEN and for being one-third of the electronic-feminist-punk band and performance project Le Tigre. For more than a decade Samson\u2019s career as a visual artist, musician, producer, and DJ has landed her at the intersection of music, art, activism, and fashion. She has toured the world, produced songs for Grammy award winning artists, written for publications such as The Huffington Post, Talkhouse, and Creative Time Review, created multimedia artwork, hosted documentary programs, acted, modeled, and engaged in direct support with a wide-range of progressive social and political causes. Samson is now an Assistant Arts Professor at New York University\u2019s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.\nCommissioned by Stanford Live, Stanford University; The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi; Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Institute of Technology; Green Music Center of Sonoma State University; Arizona Arts Live at University of Arizona; and developed through a creative residency at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts.
