"description":"In this talk, we will begin with a quick review of group actions on posets, rank-selected homology of posets, representation stability, and a nice way of interpreting the rank-selected homology of the Boolean lattice as a Specht module of ribbon shape. This interpretation allows us to prove a sharp representation stability bound for the rank-selected homology of the Boolean lattice. We then describe a new \u200bribbon basis for the rank-selected homology of any geometric lattice. In the case of the partition lattice, this ribbon basis interacts with Young symmetrizers in much the way a traditional Specht module would. Using this basis, we prove a sharp representation stability bound for the rank-selected homology of the partititon lattice, a bound that had previously been conjectured by the speaker and Vic Reiner. This is joint work with Sheila Sundaram.",

"description":"Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop, or are in need of an exemption, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this\u00a0form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging, please reach out to the GROPWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and\/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.",

"description":"Abstract: What is the long-time optimal mixing rate achievable under enstrophy-constrained flows when both advection and diffusion are active? To address this question, we investigate the long-time behavior of optimal mixing in an advection--diffusion equation using a shell model framework, a reduced model that captures the essential kinematics of advection and diffusion. Our focus is on quantifying the decay of scalar variance, measured by the shell-model analogue of the $H^{-1}$ mix-norm, under enstrophy-constrained stirring. We perform long-time computations using both local-in-time (maximizing the instantaneous mixing rate) and global-in-time (maximizing mixedness at a prescribed final time) optimization strategies. For mixing with diffusion ($\\kappa>0$), the numerical results for both strategies show that the scalar length scale is eventually limited by a generalized Batchelor scale, in close agreement with theoretical predictions. In this regime, the shell-model analogue of the $H^{-1}$ mix-norm decays exponentially in time at a rate independent of the diffusivity $\\kappa$. Compared with the purely advective case ($\\kappa=0$), diffusion significantly enhances the long-time mixing rate; moreover, increasing diffusivity further improves mixing efficiency by reducing the prefactor. Guided by these numerical observations, we derive new conditional lower bounds on the decay rate of the $H^{-1}$ norm that are strictly independent of the diffusivity parameter $\\kappa$ when $\\kappa>0$. The computed decay rates are consistent with our theoretical bounds.\n\nThis is joint work with Baole Wen, Christian Seis, and Charles R. Doering.\n\nContact: Silas Alben",

Need help fixing a flat or getting your gears to shift smoothly? \nSign up for a 30-minute slot and your bike for peer-to-peer bike repair and maintenance. Our volunteers can help you diagnose bike problems, guide you through repairs, and provide the tools & materials needed to get you back to riding.\n\nEvery Wednesday from 4-6pm and Friday from 3-5:30pm in the Duderstadt Fabrication Underground (B430-Lower Level) SIGN UP HERE: https:\/\/tr.ee\/Lp9kLnnfP9\n \nThe Duderstadt Fabrication Underground's Bike Repair rack is available for use during all operation hours (M-F 12-6p). WoW Volunteers will only be there at our dedicated support hours with additional materials (tire patches, grease, etc). \n\nThis is NOT a drop-off service: ALL participants are expected to stay and participate in repairs to learn basic bike maintenance with the support of our volunteers. Expect to get your hands dirty and leave feeling more confident in your skills!\n\nIf you are interested in becoming a volunteer at any skill level for our new program, please email wolverinesonwheels-admin@umich.edu or sign up here: https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1QVMuOatF-toPc_ky9QIAeeD0ob-ndBGA4uUFm9EAZ0g\/edit?usp=sharing",

"description":"Features of the black hole interior can be extracted from the analytic structure of boundary correlation functions. Working in the geodesic approximation, we find analytic continuations that probe the interior of rotating and charged black holes. These generate contributions from timelike geodesics that thread the interior and emerge in a future universe. We implement these continuations on the momentum space two-point function and exemplify this in several black hole backgrounds. We also identify position space analytic continuations achieving the same task that incorporate different continued momentum space correlators. These correspond to non-perturbative corrections to the WKB approximation. We demonstrate this explicitly in the rotating BTZ black hole by showing that the interior geodesics contribute to the continued position space correlator and motivate a picture for how these contributions arise in higher dimensions. For AdS Schwarzschild, we identify the analytically continued solution that captures the bouncing geodesic. We discuss the possibility of using these continuations to probe the instability of inner horizons from the boundary.",
