Europe has to chart its new course beyond the immediate impact of the second Trump presidency.\n\nFran\u00e7ois Heisbourg is a senior advisor on Europe of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and special adviser of the Paris-based Fondation pour la Recherche Strat\u00e9gique (FRS). He has served in government (French mission to the UN in New York, policy planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international security adviser to the Minister of Defense), industry (Thomson-CSF, today\u2019s Thales; Matra, now in Airbus), academia (professor of the world politics course at Sciences-Po Paris), and the think-tank world (as director of the IISS and subsequently the FRS). He has sat on blue-ribbon bodies, notably the French government\u2019s White Paper on terrorism (2006) and the Defense and National Security White Papers (under President Sarkozy in 2007-2018 and President Hollande in 2012-2013); the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament; and the International Commission on the Balkans. He chaired the council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) from 1998 to 2018, and of the IISS (2001-2018), and was a Richard von Weizs\u00e4cker Fellow at the Bosch Academy in Berlin (2015-2017). These changes raise important questions: What does it mean to \u201cgrow up\u201d today? Are young people simply taking longer to become adults, or has the very nature of adulthood changed? In this talk, I provide an overview of the modern transition to adulthood \u2014 what it is, why it matters, and how it has evolved across recent generations. I examine changes in education, work, relationships, parenthood, and health-related behaviors such as substance use. Rather than viewing young adulthood as a fixed stage that looks the same across time, I consider how historical circumstances shape the opportunities, challenges, and expectations young people face. The goal is to better understand not only today\u2019s young adults, but also the changing social landscape in which each generation comes of age.\n\nAbout the speaker: Justin Jager is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Associate Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.
