Rios will talk specifically about Mexico\/Latin America, and the Arizona-Sonora border, where he grew up. \r\n\r\nAlberto R\u00edos, Arizona\u2019s inaugural poet laureate and a recent chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, is the author of twelve books and chapbooks of poetry, including *The Theater of Night*\u2014winner of the 2007 PEN\/Beyond Margins Award\u2014three collections of short stories, and a memoir about growing up on the border, Capirotada. His book *The Smallest Muscle in the Human Body* was a finalist for the National Book Award. R\u00edos is the recipient of numerous accolades and his work is included in over 300 national and international literary anthologies. He is also the recent host of the PBS programs *Art in the 48 and Books & Co.*, for which he won a 2020 Rocky Mountain Emmy Award. His work is regularly taught and translated, and has been adapted to dance and both classical and popular music. R\u00edos is a University Professor of Letters, Regents\u2019 Professor, and the Katharine C. Turner Chair in English at Arizona State University. In 2017, he was named director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race, spirituality, history, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown, which is evident in his work. \r\n\r\nMorris\u2019 artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother, Dell Pryor, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades, exposed James to many emerging and master artists.
