The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.

Historically, research and creative practice have been constructed as "opposites." This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an "applied art." Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases, design can be a purely problem solving activity, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.

In its seventh year, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research, worked on by faculty, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.

Presentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.

Research Through Making Installations:

"Tap"
Adam Fure

"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making"
Ana Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule

"Dip and Dive in the D"
Claudia Wigger

"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments"
Wes McGee, Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov

"Post Rock"
Meredith Miller and Thom Moran

Grant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:

Benjamin Ball, Lead Artist and Principal, Ball-Nogues Studio
Brooke Hodge, Deputy director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
Mark Lamster, Architecture critic, The Dallas Morning News

This exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15.

The Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor. Exhibition hours are Thursday to Sunday from 3:00-7:00pm unless otherwise noted.

About University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice, advancing global engagement, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report), Master of Science in Architecture, Master of Urban Planning, Master of Urban Design, and PhD programs.",

This investigation is part of a larger project looking at contact induced effect of long-term Quechua-Aymara contact in Puno, Peru, focusing primarily on the variations and changes that have affected word order, and more specifically, location of the verb in Quechua and Aymara sentences. My analysis departs from prior studies on word order in Quechua (and eventually) by focusing primarily on naturally occurring data that has come from public uses of Quechua in political and media domains. From my preliminary investigations, I will present a typology of sentential and clausal verb placement in Quechua. Based on this typology, I will also set the stage for the theoretical questions that will guide the remainder of my investigation into verb placement in Aymara, and help track potential contact-induced changes in word order that are a result of long term Quechua-Aymara contact.
Abstract:
We say that a social choice rule is implementable with (small) transfers if one can design a mechanism whose set of equilibrium outcomes coincides with that specified by the rule but the mechanism allows for (small) ex post transfers among the players. We show in private-value environments that any incentive compatible rule is implementable with small transfers. We obtain this permissive implementation result by proposing a natural extension of Abreu and Matsushima (1994) to incomplete information environments. Furthermore, in order to showcase the applicability of our results, we relate them to the recent developments in implementation theory. Next we revisit the conjecture by Abreu and Matsushima (1994), who claim that the extension of Abreu and Matsushima (1994) may be possible by mimicking the argument of Abreu and Matsushima (1992b). To the extent that our mechanism is a natural extension of that of Abreu and Matsushima (1994), we show by example that their conjecture is not unconditionally warranted to cover fully interdependent-value environments. We therefore identify a condition under which our results can be extended to interdependent-value environments and tightly connect this identified condition to the notion of strategic distinguishability due to Bergemann and Morris (2009b).",

We are studying a number of drastic landscape changes that have occurred in the tropics over the past 140 million years and how they have influcence the extinction and origination of tropical biotas: from the extreme effects of global warming during the early Cenozoic to the global cooling of the Pliocene; from the lifting the Andes mountains to the creation of savannas; from periods with low levels of CO2 to events with extreme high levels of CO2.
Students in all departments and programs (graduate and undergraduate) across the University of Michigan are invited to submit literary translations of texts from Latin, Ancient Greek, and Modern Greek. We know that there are many people inspired by the beauty of these languages who wish to render them more freely and creatively than classwork often involves. This contest is intended to highlight the work of students who are interested in the process of translation as a creative, intellectually meaningful enterprise.

Rules and Prizes

1. Please submit your work anonymously in the following format: FOUR hard copies of your English translation (along with the original text) and ONE separate cover page (listing the title and author of the text you translated, your name and email address, and your undergraduate major or graduate program).

2. Submissions are due on Friday, April 1, 2016 by 5:00pm to the Comparative Literature Main Office, 2021 Tisch Hall (2nd floor).

3. All submissions will be judged anonymously by a panel of faculty members from Classics, Comparative Literature, English, and related departments.

4. Students affiliated with any UM department are eligible.

5. All work should consist of original translations/interpretations of works from Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, or Latin.

6. Original works may be in prose or verse and translations may be in prose, verse, or other format, such as multi-
media.

7. Maximum length of written submissions is five double-spaced pages.

8. In each category (undergraduate and graduate), the prizes will be $100 each.

9. Winners will be invited to present their translations at the annual Classics Department awards ceremony on April 18, 2016.
This paper is an attempt to understand music theory from the perspective of written and sounding media. We will examine three radically different music-theoretical practices, which operate with different forms of written notation, different musical instruments, and with surprisingly different purposes in mind: the monochord-based theory of Franchises Gaffurius (1518), the siren-based theory of Wilhelm Opelt (1834), and the piano-and-score based theory commonly practiced in our age.
The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...the John Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture by David Adjaye.

David Adjaye OBE is recognized as a leading architect of his generation. Adjaye was born in Tanzania to Ghanaian parents and his influences range from contemporary art, music and science to African art forms and the civic life of cities. In 1994 he set up his first office, where his ingenious use of materials and his sculptural ability established him as an architect with an artist’s sensibility and vision.

He reformed his studio as Adjaye Associates in 2000 and immediately won several prestigious commissions. In Oslo he designed the Nobel Peace Centre in the shell of a disused railway station (completed in 2005). In London his design for the Whitechapel Idea Store pioneered a new approach to the provision of information services (2005). Later projects in London included the Stephen Lawrence Centre, with teaching and community spaces (2007), Rivington Place, an exhibition venue and resource centre (2007), and the Bernie Grant Centre for the performing arts (2007). Adjaye Associates’ largest completed project to date is the £160 million Moscow School of Management Skolkovo (2010).

Adjaye Associates now has four international offices, with projects throughout the world. These include a shopping and cultural complex in Beirut (ongoing), a concept store in Lagos (2014), a new headquarters building for the International Finance Corporation in Dakar (ongoing) and a hospital in Rwanda (ongoing).

Adjaye frequently collaborates with contemporary artists on art and installation projects. Examples include The Upper Room, with thirteen paintings by Chris Ofili (2002), Within Reach, a second installation with Ofili in the British pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2003), and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art for the 21st Century Pavilion that was designed to show a projection work by Olafur Eliasson, Your Black Horizon, at the 2005 Venice Biennale. The Upper Room is now in the permanent collection of Tate Britain. Adjaye is now collaborating with Okwui Enwezor on the design of the forthcoming 56th Venice Art Biennale.

Adjaye has taught at the Royal College of Art, where he had previously studied, and at the Architectural Association School in London, and has held distinguished professorships at the universities of Pennsylvania, Yale and Princeton. He is currently the John C. Portman Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard. He was awarded the OBE for services to architecture in 2007, received the Design Miami/ Year of the Artist title in 2011, the Wall Street Journal Innovator Award in 2013 and the W.E.B. Du Bois medal from Harvard University.

The material from Adjaye’s ten-year study of the capital cities of Africa was shown in Urban Africa, an exhibition at the Design Museum, London (2010) and published as African Metropolitan Architecture (New York, 2011, and as Adjaye Africa Architecture, London, 2011). He was the artistic director of GEO-graphics: A map of art practices in Africa, past and present, a major exhibition at the Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels (2010). The last exhibition of his architectural work, David Adjaye: Output, was held at Gallery MA, Tokyo (2010) and he is now collaborating with Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Art Institute of Chicago on a comprehensive retrospective exhibition, which will open in 2015.

The John Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo's extraordinary contributions to architecture, to honor his distinguished professional work and to pay tribute to this highly respected alumnus of the Architecture Program at the University of Michigan.

About University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful, inclusive and better built environment. Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Large scale excavations began in the 18th century, and since then, Pompeii has been a popular destination for tourists and an invaluable source of information about ancient Roman life. The site now attracts millions of visitors each year.

The ancient ruins of Pompeii have been subject to increasing deterioration as a result of centuries of exposure to the elements and to wear and tear caused by visitors.

Professor Osanna spearheads the ongoing Grande Progetto Pompei (the Great Pompeii Project)—an enormous undertaking in which teams of architects, skilled workers, restorers and archaeologists use the latest technologies to manage ongoing research, conservation, restoration, and infrastructure at Pompeii. As a result of this impressive project, more of Pompeii than ever before is open to the public. This project is the subject of his lecture.

A Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Basilicata, and Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Naples – Federico II, Professor Osanna was educated at the University of Perugia and the University of San Marino. He has directed numerous excavations in Europe at ancient sites including Satriano, Siris and Herakleia, Alesia, and Gabii. He is an expert on Archaic and Iron Age Italy, on Greek colonization, and on cultural interactions in Italy.

This lecture and the conference, "Reframing Roman Luxury", is sponsored by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Institute for the Humanities, the Departments of Classical Studies and History of Art, the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology, the Interdepartmental Program in Greek and Roman History, and an anonymous donor.

The lecture is free and open to the public.",
