At their summits were a select few\u2014kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs, and covered in beads and precious metals, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning \u201cpower figure\u201d) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles, animal skin, metal, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king\u2019s physical body and minkisi. Changes in technology introduces challenges for researchers who have these kinds of aspirations. An explosion of information that is available for \"free\" have led many people to question the kinds of scientific activities for which they or the government should pay. A simultaneous promulgation of online \"experts\" have led many to question the role or authority of science in decision making. This presentation explains these challenges and then examines how changes in researcher training, particularly improvements in communication, increased commitments to rigor and transparency, and improved stakeholder engagement, can affect the types of opportunities that future scientists will (and will not) have.\r\n\r\nBIO:\r\nArthur Lupia studies decision making and learning. He uses this information to explain to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences. His work clarifies how information and institutions affect policy and politics and how people make decisions when they lack information. He draws from multiple scientific and philosophical disciplines and uses multiple research methods. His topics of expertise include information processing, persuasion, strategic communication, and civic competence. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, a fellow at the Center for the Study of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and is one of the inaugural Andrew Carnegie Fellows. His awards include the American Political Science Association's Ithiel de Sola Pool Award, the American Association for Public Opinion Research's Mitovsky Innovator's Award, and the National Academy of Sciences' Initiatives in Research Award. His articles appear in political science, economics, and law journals, and his editorials are published in leading newspapers. His research has been supported by a wide range of groups including the World Bank, the Public Policy Institute of California, the Markle Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. The interaction of input-output networks with industry-level market structure affects the amplification of shocks and the pattern of diffusion in the model, generating cascades of firm entry and exit across the economy. In this model, sales provide a poor measure of the systemic importance of industries. Unlike the relevant notions of centrality in competitive constant-returns-to-scale models, systemic importance depends on the industry\u2019s role as both a supplier and as a consumer of inputs, as well as the market structure of industries.
