This is particularly true when larger-scale processes, such as climate and weather, need to be translated to finer space-time scale process dynamics, such as soil moisture, channel hydraulics, and erosion and sediment transport. In this context, we pursue both modeling approaches and empirical observations and this presentation will illustrate both, highlighting latest research efforts. Specifically, we have developed a suite of integrated models simulating hydrologic and vegetation processes, flow dynamics, erosion, and sediment transport, tRIBS+VEGGIE-FEaST. The model aims to take advantage of the growing wealth of data representing watershed topography, vegetation, and soil, as well as urban environment, facilitating mechanistic exploration of (eco)hydrological factors and their feedback mechanisms. Research applications will demonstrate an urban flooding problem and a mechanistic attribution of non-uniqueness of upland soil erosion. Another example will focus on ecohydrology of Amazonian rainforests that experience seasonal droughts, while showing maximum rates of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration during these dry intervals. While global attention was transfixed by the capture of oil tankers and large container ships, the expansion of piracy in the Indian Ocean led to many more engagements between pirates and motorized dhows that sail from port to port in the western Indian Ocean littoral. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in India, UAE, and Somalia this talk focuses on these interactions between pirates and dhows in the watery expanses of the Western Indian Ocean. Specifically, by highlighting what came to be known as the practice of \u201cmothershipping\u201d\u2013the use of captured dhows to expand the spatial and temporal range of piracy\u2014I note worlds of violence, threat and hospitality constructed in these moments of encounter. Instead of a vision of the Indian Ocean that foregrounds long histories and cosmopolitan exchange, \u201cmothershipping\u201d emphasizes forms of contact that are both fleeting and overwhelmed by real and potential violence. Through an ethnographic engagement with this practice, I show how these onboard encounters can help theorize spatial and regional futures in the Indian Ocean and beyond.", "occurrence_notes":null,
