They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n \r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east.\r\n \r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n \r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. Characterization of the electronic structure and optical properties at these interfaces is crucial for understanding charge transfer dynamics and energy conversion mechanisms. Many-body perturbation theory, such as the GW-BSE formalism (G: Greens function; W: screened Coulomb interaction; BSE: Bethe-Salpeter equation), provides a formal theoretical framework for predicting band energy level alignments and optical properties, but the computational cost for typical interfaces is high. Here, I will introduce new methodological advancements for accelerating many-body calculations of large heterogeneous interfaces based on the idea of dielectric embedding. Furthermore, I will show applications to systems of experimental importance for insights into structure-property relationships, including covalent organic frameworks adsorbed on metal substrates and (metallo)phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on transition-metal dichalcogenides. Lastly, I will discuss our recent work on the characterization of quantum dot assemblies and relevant interfaces.\r\n\r\nSpeaker Bio:\r\nZhenfei got his B.S. in chemistry from Peking University in China in 2007. He then worked with Professor Kieron Burke in University of California, Irvine for his Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry between 2007 and 2012. After that, he worked with Professor Jeffrey Neaton as a postdoc in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California, Berkeley.
