Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n \r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east.\r\n \r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n \r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\r\n\r\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. From the earliest days of the Soviet project, children\u2019s literature was taken unusually seriously\u2014its quality and subject matter were issues of grave political significance. Yet, it was often written and illustrated by experimental writers and artists who found the childlike aesthetic congenial to their experiments in primitivism, minimalism, and other avant\u2011garde trends. In the more repressive environment of the 1930s, experimental aesthetics were largely relegated to unofficial and underground literature, but unofficial writers continued to author children\u2019s books. By the end of the Soviet period, there was an unspoken consensus that children\u2019s literature was perhaps the best part of the Soviet literary canon; meanwhile, the childlike aesthetic frequently migrated into unpublished unofficial poetry as well, offering new forms and forms of poetic subjectivity for underground authors.\r\n \r\nIn this talk, Morse will introduce the book and some of its protagonists, while also indulging in a discussion of their work as a specifically post-war phenomenon. How might the same childlike lexical and formal elements, abundant humor, and childlike lyric speakers, which served as markers of unofficial aesthetics, additionally participate in articulating wartime and post-war experience (likewise excluded from official narratives)?\r\n \r\nAinsley Morse teaches in the Russian and comparative literature departments at Dartmouth College and is a translator of Russian and former Yugoslav literatures. Her research focuses on the literature and culture of the post-war Soviet period, particularly unofficial or \"underground\" poetry, as well as the avant-garde and children's literature. She translates Soviet and post-Soviet Russophone literature and theory, as well as former Yugoslav and contemporary B\/C\/S literature and, most recently, Ukrainian modernist and contemporary poetry.\r\n\r\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom.
