U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\r\n\r\nTitle: Finding low-dimensional structure in messy data\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nIn order to draw inferences from large, high-dimensional datasets, we often seek simple structure that models the phenomena represented in those data. Low-rank linear structure is one of the most flexible and efficient such models, allowing efficient prediction, inference, and anomaly detection. However, classical techniques for learning low-rank models assume your data have only minor corruptions that are uniform over samples. Modern research in optimization has begun to develop new techniques to handle realistic messy data \u2014 where data are missing, have wide variations in quality, and\/or are observed through nonlinear measurement systems.\r\n\r\nIn this talk I will give a high-level overview of recent research in this area. Then I will focus on the problem of learning linear subspace structure from multiple data sources of varying quality. This is common in problems like sensor networks or medical imaging, where different measurements of the same phenomenon are taken with different quality sensing (eg high or low radiation). In this context, learning the low-rank structure via PCA suffers from treating all data samples as if they are equally informative. I will discuss our theoretical results on weighted PCA. I will then present new algorithms for the non-convex probabilistic PCA formulation of this problem and a novel SDP relaxation.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nLaura Balzano is an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and of Statistics by courtesy, at the University of Michigan. She is recipient of the NSF Career Award, ARO Young Investigator Award, AFOSR Young Investigator Award, and faculty fellowships from Intel and 3M. She received the Vulcans Education Excellence Award at the University of Michigan. Her main research focus is on modeling with big, messy data \u2014 highly incomplete or corrupted data, uncalibrated data, and heterogeneous data \u2014 and its applications in a wide range of scientific problems. Her expertise is in statistical signal processing, matrix factorization, and optimization. In the first piece, I will be wearing my research scientist hat and in the second, my Division Director hat.\r\n\r\nExtreme geomagnetic storms pose a major threat to ground-based infrastructure and electric power transmission systems in particular. There has been a major recent focus on improving our understanding of extreme storms and allowing the new understanding to flow into detailed power engineering hazard assessments. Also the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has been involved and we have a framework in place that requires all U.S. utilities operating at or above 200 kV to carry out detailed hazard assessments. In the first part of the presentation, I will discuss the development of extreme geomagnetic storm scenarios for the power engineering hazard assessments. I will also briefly discuss my own role in the regulatory work.\r\n\r\nThe NASA Goddard Space Flight Center\u2019s Heliophysics Science Division (HSD) vision is \u201cTo discover and innovate in heliophysics for the benefit of those on Earth and those exploring the solar system.\" HSD conducts research on the Sun, its extended solar-system environment (the heliosphere), and interactions of Earth, other planets, small bodies, and interstellar gas with the heliosphere. Division research also encompasses geospace -- Earth's uppermost atmosphere, the ionosphere, and the magnetosphere -- and the changing environmental conditions throughout the coupled heliosphere. Scientists in the HSD develop models, spacecraft missions and instruments, and systems to manage and disseminate heliophysical data. They interpret and evaluate data gathered from instruments, draw comparisons with computer simulations and theoretical models, and publish the results. In the second part of the presentation, I will introduce you to our Division and discuss how you can get involved with our work.\r\n\r\nBIO:\r\nDr. Pulkkinen is currently Acting Director of the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Pulkkinen received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Helsinki, Finland in 2003. Subsequently he joined the nonlinear dynamics group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to carry out his postdoctoral research 2004-2006. Dr. Pulkkinen's Ph.D. and postdoctoral research involved studies on both ground effects of space weather and complex nonlinear dynamics of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. 2011-2013 Dr. Pulkkinen worked as an Associate Director of Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Sciences and as an Associate Professor at The Catholic University of America (CUA). At CUA Dr. Pulkkinen launched a new Space Sciences and Space Weather program crafted to educate the next generation space weather scientists and operators. Dr Pulkkinen entered NASA civil service in 2013 to lead the Space Weather Research Center that provided heliophysics science and space weather services to NASA's robotic mission. 2017-2020 Dr neurophysiology make designing these therapies very difficult. The sophisticated interactions of neural control systems with the body and mind has limited our ability to predict the effects of neural interfaces in advance, which forces the field to rely on painstaking animal experiments to test and design the devices. This work presents an alternate way forward using new functionally predictive hybrid models that let us prototype and test neural interfaces in cheap, low-risk settings to get the most out of the cumbersome and expensive animal and human studies that require implanted electrodes. The key innovation is to combine parts of traditionally separate model systems (animal, human, mathematical, or statistical) into hybrid frameworks that use the strengths of each type to make At the root of this intensifying attachment to narratives of resistance is the belief that histories of the subaltern can be written; all we need to do is \u201cread against the grain\u201d of the literary sources, or avail ourselves of new frameworks for interpreting non-literary material evidence, in order to recover these histories. Organizing itself around the concept of epistemicide, my paper will reevaluate this historiographical tendency and propose some alternatives.\r\n\r\nBiography: Dan-el Padilla Peralta is associate professor of classics at Princeton University.
