An endomorphism of a Riemannian manifold is said to be expanding if it increases the norm of tangent vectors everywhere (possibly only after a few iterations); the most basic examples of this are the maps $z \\mapsto z^n$ for $n > 1$ on the unit circle. We'll show (following Shub) that any two homotopic expanding endomorphisms of a compact manifold are topologically conjugate, and give a correspondence between the conjugating homeomorphisms and (certain) endomorphisms of the fundamental group. I'll assume some basic covering space theory, but not much else. Speaker(s): Salman Siddiqi (UM)
Radiative heat transfer between objects separated by nanometer-sized gaps is of considerable interest due to its promise for both non-contact modulation of heat transfer and for thermophotovoltaic energy conversion. Although radiative heat transfer at macroscopic distances is well understood, radiative heat transfer at the nanoscale remains largely unexplored. In this talk, I will describe ongoing efforts in our group to experimentally elucidate nanoscale heat radiation. Specifically, I will present our recent experimental work where we have addressed the following questions: 1) Can existing theories accurately describe radiative heat transfer in single nanometer sized gaps1? 2) What is the role of film thickness on nanoscale radiation2? and 3) Can radiative thermal conductances that are orders of magnitude larger than those between blackbodies be achieved3? In order to address these questions we have developed a variety of instrumentation including novel nanopositioning platforms and microdevices, which will also be described. Finally, I will briefly outline how these advances can be leveraged for future investigations of both nanoscale radiative heat transport and thermophotovoltaic energy conversion.

References:

[1] K.
In the decades following Israel's establishment, variations appeared in the attitudes of key members of the Frankfurt School -- figures like Max Horkheimer, Leo Lowenthal, Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse -- towards the Jewish state. Jack Jacobs argues in this talk that there was an inverse relationship, among associates of the School, between knowledge of Judaism and positive attitudes towards the State: the deeper their knowledge, the stronger their critique of Israel.

Jack Jacobs is a professor of political science at John Jay College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He is the author of On Socialists and “the Jewish Question” after Marx (1992), Bundist Counterculture in Interwar Poland (2009), and The Frankfurt School, Jewish Lives, and Antisemitism (2015), and is the editor of Jewish Politics in Eastern Europe: The Bund at 100 (2001), and, most recently, of Jews and the Political Left, which will be published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Jacobs was a Fulbright Scholar at Tel Aviv University in 1996-1997, and served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Vilnius Yiddish Institute in 2009.

Image courtesy of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research

If you have a disability that requires a reasonable accommodation, contact the Judaic Studies office at 734-763-9047 at least two weeks prior to the event.
The use of spectroscopic methods to document detailed mechanistic and kinetic processes taking place in polycrystalline solids, dry powders, and other bulk materials has always been challenging due to their complex optical properties. Problems typically arise from their high scattering and optical densities and sometimes from the large birefringence and dichroism. In this seminar I will describe the preparation of stable water suspensions of nanocrystalline compounds and demonstrate their use in the characterization of solid-state spectroscopic properties using simple transmission procedures. As a starting point we selected well-known photophysical probes with characteristic solid state properties to illustrate the fact that nanocrystals are a state of matter in transition between supramolecular structures and bulk solids. We gathered conclusive experimental evidence that the nanocrystals used in these experiments have the same morphology as the macroscopic specimens grown from solution. Analysis of size and size distribution by polarized microscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and probe microscopy methods (AFM, SEM) indicates that optimal samples should be of the order or 200 nm in size, which is below the wavelength of light used in most experiments, and a key parameter for the method to work well. Examples will be shown to illustrate the use of nanocrystals to obtain detailed mechanistic information of excited state processes and highly selective reactions in crystals, including a novel strategy for signal amplification with a gain based on a very unusual excited state chain reaction.
Miguel Garcia-Garibay (UCLA)",

The construction relies on deformation quantization and is related to other methods of constructing a category from a symplectic manifolds, such as the Fukaya category and the sheaf-theoretical microlocal category of Tamarkin. The talk will be accessible, with main examples being the plane, the cylinder, and the two-torus. Speaker(s): Boris L Tsygan (Northwestern University)
A series of photographs by Dutch photographer Jan Banning documenting offices in different bureaucracies around the world. Ten photographs will be displayed at the Institute for the Humanities and 40 at the Duderstadt Gallery.

Artist's Statement: Bureaucratics is a project consisting of a book and a traveling exhibition that has so far been shown in museums and galleries in some twenty countries on five continents. The book and the exhibition contain 50 photographs and are the product of an anarchist’s heart, a historian’s mind and an artist’s eye. Bureaucratics is a comparative photographic study of the culture, rituals and symbols of state civil administrations and its servants in eight countries on five continents, selected on the basis of political, historical and cultural considerations: Bolivia, China, France, India, Liberia, Russia, the United States, and Yemen. In each country, I visited up to hundreds of offices of members of the executive in different services and at different levels. The visits were unannounced and the accompanying writer, Will Tinnemans*, by interviewing kept the employees from tidying up or clearing the office. That way, the photos show what a local citizen would be confronted with when entering.

The photography has a conceptual, typological approach reminding of August Sander’s ‘Menschen des 20 Jahrhunderts’ (‘People of the Twentieth Century’). Each subject is posed behind his or her desk. The photos all have a square format (fitting the subject), are shot from the same height (that of the client), with the desk – its front or side photographed parallel to the horizontal edges of the frame – serving as a bulwark protecting the representative of rule and regulation against the individual citizen, the warm-blooded exception. They are full of telling details that sometimes reveal the way the state proclaims its power or the bureaucrat’s rank and function, sometimes of a more private character and are accompanied by information such as name, age, function and salary. Though there is a high degree of humour and absurdity in these photos, they also show compassion with the inhabitants of the state’s paper labyrinth. -Jan Banning
Affine n-space A^n is one of the most basic objects in algebraic geometry. Unfortunately, there are many basic things we don't know about its geometry and its symmetries: for example,
 (1) Is every embedding of A^k into A^n linearizable?
 (2) What is the automorphism group of A^n?
 (3) (The Jacobian Conjecture) Is every endomorphism of A^n with invertible Jacobian an isomorphism?
The Abhyankar-Moh theorem provides answers to some of these and other related questions in dimension n=2. What's surprising is that even though the statement is purely algebraic, the shortest known proof utilizes knot theory, specifically that of torus knots. We will explain how torus knots naturally appear in algebraic geometry, and present Rudolph's knot-theoretic proof of the Abhyankar-Moh theorem. Speaker(s): Takumi Murayama (UM)",
