Barcelona\u2019s city government has responded creatively to these pressures by commissioning public cr\u00e8ches with highly abstract designs that dilute their religious symbolism, thereby rendering them more compatible with principles of separation and neutrality, and with the progressive image, the city wishes to project. This strategy of \u201caesthetic transmutation\u201d represents an alternative to other possible responses, such as elimination or supplementation (i.e., adding minority religious symbols). In analyzing its development, Astor employs an interactionist approach that elucidates how the stances and actions of diverse actors implicated in the process do not reflect rigid pre-established ideological positions on identity, church-state relations, or the place of religion in the public sphere, but rather respond flexibly to situational interactions, pressures, and opportunities. His findings have implications for how sociologists conceptualize religious icons, the forces driving their transformation, and the role of interactive contexts in shaping how such transformation unfolds.\r\n\r\nAvi Astor is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona and is part of the Research Center for the Sociology of Religion (ISOR). He obtained his PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 2011. He has written on a variety of topics related to religion, culture, and identity. He is the author of *Rebuilding Islam in Contemporary Spain* (Sussex, 2017). Veins (venas) have captured their imagination since at least colonial times when mining and other extractive projects dominated visual renderings of water. Plumes (plumas)have emerged more recently as hydrogeologists try to convey to the public the fragility and volatility of aquifers in danger of chemical contamination. Mantles (mantos) persist as figures that evoke the extended and enveloping character of water as a material substance. Measured against human bodies, human-made disasters, and human needs, these figurations that guide political decisions about harm and well-being. This paper examines the assumptions about collective life in Costa Rica that are written into these figures. What makes this hard is that human behavior\u2014especially when interacting with other agents\u2014is vastly complex, varying between individuals, environments, and over time. Thus, robots rely on data and machine learning throughout the design process and during deployment to build and refine models of humans. However, by blindly trusting their data-driven human models, today\u2019s robots confidently plan unsafe behaviors around people, resulting in anything from miscoordination to dangerous collisions.\r\n \r\nMy research aims to ensure safety in human-robot interaction, particularly when robots learn from and about people. In this talk, I will discuss how treating robot learning algorithms as dynamical systems driven by human data enables safe human-robot interaction. I will first introduce a Bayesian monitor which infers online if the robot's learned human model can evolve to well-explain observed human data. I will then discuss how control-theoretic tools enable us to formally quantify what the robot could learn online from human data and how quickly it could learn it. Coupling these ideas with robot motion planning algorithms, I will demonstrate how robots can safely and automatically adapt their behavior based on how trustworthy their learned human models are. I will end this talk by taking a step back and raising the question: \u201cWhat is the \u2018right\u2019 notion of safety when robots interact with people?\u201d and discussing opportunities for how rethinking our notions of safety can capture more subtle aspects of human-robot interaction.\r\n\r\nBIO:\r\nAndrea Bajcsy is a Ph.D. candidate at UC Berkeley in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, working with Professors Anca Dragan and Claire Tomlin. She studies safe human-robot interaction, particularly when robots learn from and about people. Her research unites traditionally disparate methods from control theory and machine learning to develop theoretical frameworks and practical algorithms for human-robot interaction in domains like assistive robotic arms, quadrotors, and autonomous cars. Prior to her Ph.D., she earned her B.S. at the University of Maryland, College Park in Computer Science in 2016. However, it is unclear if all types of incongruent constructions have a shared mental representation, or if there is a limit on how different the word orders in the two languages can be to still have a shared representation. The proposed experiment investigates bilingual comprehension of incongruent codeswitched adjective\/noun constructions in Spanish and English through the Stop Making Sense task (Mauner, Tanenhaus, & Carlson, 1995).
