Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water, winter, plants, critters, rocks and the heavens. Her work, often representational and sometimes narrative, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.
Abstract:
We exploit a federal oil lease lottery to examine how markets correct for initial misallocation. Lottery participants included oil companies, as well as individuals without the capital or expertise to drill for oil. In the absence of reallocation, we expect less drilling on leases won by individuals. We find that leases won by firms and individuals have similar short- and long-term outcomes, suggesting that secondary markets rapidly and efficiently correct for misallocation to individuals. However, a subset of parcels with nearby oil production have 50% less drilling when they are won by firms. We develop a simple model to demonstrate how information asymmetry adversely affects firms to a greater degree. Because individuals have larger gains from trade, they are more likely to overcome asymmetric information and trade with a nearby producing firm.
Taffy is a type of candy made by repeated "pulling" (stretching and folding) a mass of heated sugar. The purpose of pulling is to get air bubbles into the taffy, which gives it a nicer texture. Until the late 19th century, taffy was pulled by hand, an arduous task. The early 20th century saw an avalanche of new devices to mechanize the process. These devices have fascinating connections to the topological dynamics of surfaces, in particular with pseudo-Anosov maps. Special algebraic integers such as the Golden ratio and the lesser-known Silver ratio make an appearance, as well as more exotic numbers. We examine different designs from a mathematical perspective, and discuss their efficiency. Speaker(s): Jean-Luc Thiffeault (University of Wisconsin)",

Although sometimes perceived of as ephemeral or outside the purview of conventional academic norms, an effective scholarly digital persona often merges the personal and political.

How can social media channels be used to narrowcast your research to useful potential audiences in academia and facilitate geographically distributed collaboration around rapidly developing research topics? What are the norms about negotiating power differentials both with students and with senior faculty? How can you protect yourself against potential online abuse? What are the best strategies for translating the online grey literature that you may generate into peer-reviewed print publications?

It uses ideas about DIY publishing and academic branding from MICA professor Ellen Lupton and UC Irvine professor Julia Lupton and will help more advanced participants consider how to create an integrated website as the main portal of an online academic presence.
Ian Bekker (North-West University, South Africa)

This research provides a socio-stylistic analysis of the linguistic and visual elements in the Baby’s on Fire music video by zef-rap- rave South African band Die Antwoord, ‘zef’ being definable as an ideological positioning that is local, working-class and which attempts to transcend existing boundaries of language and race within the South African milieu. The analysis shows that a full understanding of the meaning of this text requires an appreciation of its use of vari-directional voicing (Bakhtin 1984, Rampton 1995, 2006) to create both a parodic and, arguably, meta-parodic (Morson 1989, Dentith 2000, Coupland 2007) stance on racial, class and gender politics within the context of contemporary post-Apartheid South Africa. On a purely parodic level, the text is shown to clearly provide a critique of traditional Afrikaner identity as well as two more modern manifestations of this identity: nouveau-riche femininity and what we refer to as ‘hip-hop masculinity’, both responses to globalisation. The status of zef itself as a socio-ideological phenomenon is, however, shown to be more ambiguous. On the one hand, by drawing on Bakhtin’s (1965) work on the carnivalesque, we are able to provide some evidence for a meta-parodic stance that is inherently ambiguous, self-reflexive and open to self-critique. On the other hand, it remains clear that Die Antwoord’s project (as reflected, for example, in Baby’s on Fire) has, quite legitimately, been the subject of accusations of cultural appropriation (Haupt 2012, Scott 2012) given their use of salient elements of so-called ‘Coloured’ culture as part of accruing large amounts of material capital.
To any (affine) permutation one can associate its (affine) Stanley symmetric function, which encodes some combinatorial information about its reduced words. Upon removing the Schur terms whose shape is not contained in a fixed rectangle, the resulting symmetric function is Schur-nonnegative, and its Schur coefficients describe: (1) Schubert structure constants for the product of a Schur function and Schubert polynomial; (2) cohomology classes of positroid varieties in a Grasssmannian; (3) three-point Gromov-Witten invariants for Grassmannians. We describe a representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic is this symmetric function. As a special case, this includes Postnikov's conjecture that toric Schur functions are Frobenius characteristics of toric Specht modules. Speaker(s): Brendan Pawlowski (U. Michigan)",
