"description":"Pedro Camanho\r\nProfessor\r\nMechanical Engineering\r\nUniversity of Porto\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nThe accurate prediction of the onset and grow of damage mechanisms in laminated polymer composite materials, as well as the final collapse of composite structures, has been challenging the scientific community over the last decades. In this presentation, several analysis models that span different time and length scales will be described. Computational micromechanical models enable the detailed representation of the damage mechanisms at the scale of the reinforcing fibers, however this level of detail is associated with high computational costs, especially when using direct numerical simulations. This calls for the development of mesomechanical models that use information obtained at smaller scales. Mesomechanical models typically combine continuum damage mechanics, which represent ply damage, with cohesive zone models, which represent delamination. While being a methodology that properly balances accuracy with reasonable computing times, mesomechanical models are not well-suited to perform uncertainty quantification and management analysis as the computational cost would be far too high. This calls for macromechanical models, developed at the length scale of the laminate, and their combination with machine learning techniques. This work will show how to use theory-guided machine learning to generate B-basis allowables used in the certification of composite aircraft structural details.\r\n\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nPedro Camanho (MSc in Mechanical Engineering, UPorto, 1995) received his PhD in Composite Materials from the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London, UK, in 1999. In the same year he joined the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management as Director of the Structural Integrity Unit and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Porto as Assistant Professor. Since 2014 he has been Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Porto. Pedro Camanho is currently the President of the Associated Laboratory in Energy, Transportation and Aeronautics.\r\n\r\nThe main research interests of Pedro Camanho are the mechanics of deformation and fracture of advanced polymer composite materials, and new concepts for lightweight composite materials and structures for aerospace applications such as hybrid, nano-structured, multi-functional, variable-stiffness, morphing, energy-storage and ultra-thin composites.\r\n\r\nPedro Camanho is member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Solids and Structures (Elsevier), Composites Part A (Elsevier), European Journal of Computational Mechanics (Taylor & Francis), and Computers, Materials and Continua (Tech Science Press). "description":"Corporations are increasingly expected to pursue social and environmental purpose in addition to profit, but we still do not know much about which forms of organizing may be best suited to enable them to rise to this challenge. In this paper, we ask: which distributions of decision-making power are better suited to sustaining the pursuit of multiple purposes in corporations? To investigate this question, we present a framework of four ideal type forms of organizing that vary along two key dimensions: purpose and power. We conceptualize organizations as varying in whether they pursue a single purpose vs. multiple purposes, and in whether decision-making power is concentrated at the top (oligarchical) vs. more democratically distributed amongst workers. We then integrate organization theory and democratic theory to present three theoretical propositions. Specifically, we advance that more democratic forms of organizing will make it easier to sustain the pursuit of multiple purposes over the long term, and we propose that formal spaces of deliberation and deliberative culture help facilitate the success of such democratic forms of organizing. Our paper contributes to theorizing at the intersection of power and purpose, two lines of work that have until now evolved mostly on separate tracks.",

"description":"Ashwini Deo is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin. She will present, \"Coordinated on the context: Discourse salience, exclusivity, mirativity, precisification, and intensification in Marathi\"\r\n\r\nABSTRACT\r\nSeveral Indo-Aryan languages, including Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, and Marathi contain a discourse clitic whose uses overlap with those of English particles like exclusives only\/just, intensifiers really\/totally, precisifiers right\/exactly\/absolutely, anaphoric indeed\/that very, and scalar additive even without corresponding perfectly to any of them. In this talk, I offer an analysis of the varied and seemingly disparate uses of this particle, focusing on the Marathi variant -ts. I claim that =ts conventionally signals that interlocutors are in mutual agreement that the proposition denoted by the prejacent is uniquely salient among alternatives in the current question. That is, =ts conveys that the proposition expressed by the prejacent offers a schelling point (or focal point) for the interlocutors to coordinate on. Most effects associated with =ts are shown to arise as a consequence of pragmatic reasoning about the position of the prejacent with respect to the contextually given ordering on the current question. In addition to offering a unified analysis for Marathi =ts and its functional cognates in Indo-Aryan, this new perspective can open the door to a better understanding of why exclusivity, mirativity, precisification, and intensification might cluster together in languages. In closing, I consider the implications of =ts\u2019s meaning for a crosslinguistic picture of the lexicalization of some discourse-managing functions.",
