In his lecture, Prof. Hoover will discuss the theological views of well-known and controversial Muslim thinker Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728\/1328).\r\n \r\n Abstract:\r\n \r\n Ibn Taymiyya\u2019s (d. 728\/1328) well known Hamawiyya fatwa, a refutation of Ash\u2018ari interpretations of God\u2019s attributes, led to accusations of corporealism (tajsim) in 1298 and then his trials and imprisonment under the Mamluk authorities in 1306. The Ash\u2018arism of the time denied the plain sense of texts indicating anthropomorphic features of God like sitting on the Throne, and then either ceased thinking about them (tafwid) or reinterpreted them metaphorically (ta\u2019wil). In his Hamawiyya fatwa, Ibn Taymiyya criticizes this Ash\u2018ari hermeneutic for stripping God of his attributes, and he identifies the Ta\u2019sis al-taqdis of Ash\u2018ari theologian Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 606\/1210) as a prominent book expounding erroneous reinterpretations. Ibn Taymiyya adds that he has proofs from both reason and scripture for his views but that a fatwa is not the place to present them. Ibn Taymiyya eventually provides his proofs from reason in his massive Bayan talbis al-Jahmiyya written in 1306 or 1307. In Bayan Ibn Taymiyya refutes al-Razi\u2019s arguments in Ta\u2019sis al-Taqdis that God is not corporeal or spatially extended, as well as al-Razi\u2019s reinterpretations of anthropomorphic texts in the Qur\u2019an and the Sunna. This paper will examine Ibn Taymiyya\u2019s key rational arguments against al-Razi in Bayan and explore how Ibn Taymiyya reconceptualizes God\u2019s spatial relation to the world by drawing on Ibn Rushd\u2019s Aristotelian notion of place as the inner surface of the containing body. They are highly-excited, bound electron-hole pairs that represent giant atom-like quasiparticles in a semiconductor environment. These new particles defy conventional theories of exciton physics and open fundamentally new regimes for quantum optics with excitons.\r\n\r\nHere, I will show how their remarkable properties originate from strong, long-range polarization forces acting between pairs of such states over thousands of crystal cells, suggesting great potential for optical applications. We develop a semi-analytical cluster-expansion theory to describe the enormous optical nonlinearity of the Rydberg interactive many-body system, revealing the effect of a residual thin electron-hole plasma and bringing our theory into quantitative agreement with corresponding experiments.\r\n \r\nHowever, strong phonon coupling and inter-band dynamics can complicate this simple atom-like picture and limit the usability of Rydberg-Rydberg interactions for optical applications. Using experiments with cuprous oxide as an example, I will discuss the origins of phonon coupling and how the formation of an optical dark state can be used to mitigate its undesired effects. Finally, I will describe ongoing efforts to exploit strong Rydberg interactions of excitons in monolayered semiconductors for the creation of nonclassical light.
