Could anyone have foreseen the technical, social, and conceptual issues that have confronted the University of Michigan since its founding 200 years ago, or the challenges it has faced in the last 100, 50, or even five years? In the marshaling of knowledge and expertise, the greatest achievement of the University lies not in its continuity, but in its ability to address the unforeseen. Drawing on the student work from the Taubman College Architecture Program, “The Future Needs…Something Blue” addresses an idea of the future that lies not in the answers to questions we now know, but in possibilities we are only now beginning to imagine. Sited at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s Liberty Research Annex, the display is simultaneously shop window, gallery, and salon. Organized around a series of emergent themes it is an interactional space in which to view (in perspective, parallax, parallel, and contrast) the multiple points of view that constitute the future.
“The Future Needs…Something Blue” is curated by Associate Professor of Practice Julia McMorrough and Associate Professor John McMorrough of studioAPT (Architecture Practice Theory).
On Tuesday, September 19 at 6:00pm there will be an opening reception at the Liberty Research Annex (305 W. Liberty St., Ann Arbor). Exhibition on view September 20 - October 29.
I discuss the interplay between non-Fermi liquid behaviour and superconductivity near a quantum-critical point (QCP) in a metal. It was thought by many researchers that in D=2, non-Fermi liquid behaviour near a QCP extends to energies well above superconducting Tc, and that superconductivity involves non Fermi-liquid quasiparticles and emerges due to peculiar interplay between strong attraction and strong pair-breaking effects from self-energy. I argue that this is not necessary always the case. I show that in a situation, when critical bosons are slow compared to electrons, fermionic self-energy plays little role for superconductivity in 2D, despite that it is strong and destroys fermionic coherence. I discuss the special role of the “first Matsubara frequency” in this regard. I present explicit results for Tc for the set of models with frequency dependent effective interaction, including the strong coupling limit of electron phonon interaction.

My group is interested in exploring the impact of structural and reactive heterogeneity in soft materials with the intention of discovering synergies at the nano and mesoscale that enhance properties of interest for energy storage applications. In my talk, I will discuss two emerging systems where nano-scale heterogeneity has an impact on macro-scale performance: novel redox active polymers (RAPs) for size selective flow batteries, and ultra-thin graphene electrodes. Highly soluble RAPs are new players in redox flow technologies, and as part of our collaboration with the Joint Center for Research Energy Storage (JCESR), we are exploring the opportunities that polymeric design offers for tuning their electrochemical performance. Likewise, graphene is an emerging material that offers new opportunities in contrast to bulk carbon due to its unique thickness-dependent electron and ion transfer behavior. In both cases, short range interactions between their components determine charge transfer and transport mechanisms, so it is essential to count with the right toolbox to elucidate their functioning. For this purpose, my group develops nano-electrochemical methods based on scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) that uniquely probe electronic and ionic processes in situ. Using these and other tools, we are starting to understand fundamental balances between electronic and ionic reactivity that we hope will have an impact on a various other applications for energy conversion and storage.

References:
[1] Barton, Z.J.; Rodríguez-López.
Please join us for the opening reception of Professor Endi Poskovic’s art exhibition and his informal art talk.

The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation, multiplicity, seriality. Through his works, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement, exile, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China, Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan, CIUM presents this exhibition.

Endi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia, Norway, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the United States Fulbright Commission, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Norwegian Government, the Camargo Foundation, the Flemish Ministry of Culture, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Jincheon Art Museum, South Korea and others.
Professor Eller will be workshopping her recent article, “Rumors of Slavery,” as well as discussing its connections to her book, We Dream Together: Dominican Independence, Haiti, and the Fight for Caribbean Freedom. In her study of the reoccupation of Dominican territory by the Spanish, Eller deepens study of the impact of the Haitian Revolution in the Atlantic world and breaks from paradigms that emphasize perpetual conflict between Haitians and Dominicans in the nineteenth century. She contextualizes the small body of writing of Dominican elites with new analyses of inclusive and popular histories of identity, community, and freedom, summoning sources that range from trial records and consul reports to fragments of poetry and song. Rethinking Dominican relationships with their communities, the national project, and the greater Caribbean, Eller shows how popular anticolonial resistance, as well as Caribbean anti-slavery movements across multiple islands and coasts, were anchored in a rich and complex political culture that traveled beyond individual shores.

Anne Eller is an assistant professor of history at Yale University. She teaches and researches colonial and modern Caribbean and Latin American history, comparative colonialisms, citizenship, Atlantic history, and the African Diaspora. She is currently writing a second monograph about the Caribbean after emancipation, tentatively entitled Other 1898s.",
