She has been a finalist for the National Book Award and the winner of the Bard Fiction Prize, the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction, the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Nonfiction, the Brooklyn Public Library Literature Prize, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the National Book Critics Circle's John Leonard Prize. In 2018, the *New York Times* listed *Her Body and Other Parties* as a member of \"The New Vanguard,\" one of \"15 remarkable books by women that are shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century.\"\r\n\r\nHer essays, fiction, and criticism have appeared in the *New Yorker*, *the New York Times*, *Granta*, *Vogue*, This American Life, *Harper\u2019s Bazaar*, Tin House, *McSweeney's Quarterly Concern*, *The Believer*, *Guernica*, *Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy*, *Best American Nonrequired Reading*, and elsewhere. His work was inspired by his father\u2019s, Denis Mukwege, the2018 Nobel Peace prize recipient for his advocacy against sexual violence in conflicts. Alain Mukwege is a consultant for the Panzi Foundation, a non-profit organization working to provide interventions to improve the quality of care and life for victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is also member of the advisory board of the International Center for Advanced Research and Training, a research center born from a collaboration between the University of Michigan and Panzi Hospital. He holds a Master a Clinical Research and Translational Science and his research interests lie in the development of mechanisms to improve women\u2019s health in developing countries and to prevent gender-based violence. Presently living in Ann Arbor Michigan to prepare for a training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, His work also involves building partnerships between Western institutions and Panzi Hospital to help develop local Congolese capacities to address local problems. This drove collaborations notably with the University of Michigan and with World without Genocide. He believes that the cessation of violence against women would be indispensable in the advancement of healthy communities and that violence against women in addition to be a violation of basic human rights is also a global health hazard. Despite these challenges, he hopes to see and contribute in the advent of a fair, peaceful and prosperous society in Congo.\r\n\r\nMbala Nkanga: Dieudonn\u00e9 Christophe Mbala Nkanga is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies in the department of Theatre and Drama at the University of Michigan. He is native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and came to U-M with extensive experience as a teacher, director, and scholar.\r\nHe specializes in theatre history, performance theories, and world drama. His research interests include: politics and poetics of language in performance and popular arts in Central Africa, intercultural\r\nism and the performance of memory in world theatre and performance; the study of Jean Genet\u2019s aesthetics of profanation and its relation with black theatre (object of a manuscript in progress); and the Mvett epic and its performance (book in preparation: Mvett: Performance, Cultural Memory, Identity Among the Fang). He is preparing the upcoming publication of his Performance, Rumor, and Audience: The Theatre of Resistance in Central Africa, 1990-2000 (Palgrave), African Theatre and Performance: History, Memory, and Forgetfulness (Francis and Taylor, upcoming in 2022) and an anthology of francophone African plays in translation.\r\n\r\nDaniel Rivkin: Daniel Rivkin is a recovering journalist who has spent most of his career working around the world, in some 70+ countries. He was Reuters TV bureau chief in Brussels and Paris, eventually managing a global product line. Since leaving Reuters, he has been a strategic communications creator and consultant for NGOs, governments, corporations and international organizations. In this talk, I will discuss how using theories from cognitive science can inform learning interventions to improve scientific and statistical literacy so that people can evaluate evidence more critically and objectively.\r\n--\r\nAudrey Michal is an Assistant Research Scientist and Part-Time Lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan. She got her B.A. in Biological Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph D. in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. This presentation will provide an introduction to the Division of Perceptual Studies and its mission and rich research tradition. Seminal among DOPS research areas has been investigation of consciousness that survives bodily death, either through near death experiences, anomalous communication with deceased family members, and\/or children whose claims to recall past lives are accompanied by large volumes of empirical support. This talk will provide an overview of this work and also broach recent research on the impact of altered states of consciousness upon extraordinary human experiences and abilities, including compassion, connection, and wellbeing. Finally, we will discuss altered states of consciousness and the potential positive impacts upon individuals, communities, and the world.\n\nJennifer \u201cKim\u201d Penberthy, Ph.D., ABPP is the Chester F. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, Division of Perceptual Studies, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Kim is a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She obtained her undergraduate and masters degree in psychology from Wake Forest University, her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, and her Fellowship at the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on the mind-body relationship and exploring human consciousness as well as extraordinary human experiences, including the impact of such on human abilities and wellness. She is a founding member of the UVA Contemplative Sciences Center and a member of the UVAAcademy of Distinguished Educators, the Wisdom & Wellbeing Program, the Leadership in Academic Matters Program, and is a Fellow of Humanism in Medicine at the University of Virginia. She is involved on an international level conducting research and consulting with the Center for Consciousness Research and the Scientific & Medical Network as well as the IANDS Research Network. Dr. Penberthy is interested in the impact of extraordinary human experiences such as NDEs and ADCs as well as intentionally pursued altered states of consciousness, such as from meditation or psychedelics. She is also dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion and exploring and honoring contemplative practices from indigenous and native cultures. She is president-elect of the Society of Clinical Psychology, the former chair of the American Psychological Association Society of Clinical Psychology Diversity Committee and is a fellow in the APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology. She has published extensively on psychotherapy and mindfulness, including 4 books, and scores of manuscripts and book chapters, and lectures internationally regarding her research.
