Young (BA Russian\/REES \u201886, JD \u201890) has devoted most of his career to refugee protection in Europe and the Middle East. Based mainly with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 1994, he also worked five years at the European Commission in pre-accession projects on law and justice, human rights, and minorities. Throughout his career, John has been engaged in refugee status determination, resettlement, asylum-building, migration management, and the identification and response to vulnerable persons. While in Brussels he prepared UNHCR's legal submissions for ECHR in Strasbourg, and the Court of Justice, and worked with the European Parliament and Commission on EU Asylum legislation. Presently he is the Head of the UNHCR Protection Learning Unit in Budapest. He has also served in Russia, Switzerland, Serbia, and Slovakia, with missions to Kenya, Uganda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.\r\n\r\nGenevi\u00e8ve Zubrzycki is professor of sociology and director of the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. She will conclude with an assessment of how the U.S. government, with its \u201call of government\u201d approach to climate change, is tackling the problem in the aviation sector.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker...\r\nJennifer Haverkamp is the Graham Family Director of U-M\u2019s Graham Sustainability Institute, a professor of practice at Michigan Law School, and a professor from practice at the Ford School of Public Policy. She also co-chaired President Schlissel\u2019s Commission on Carbon Neutrality. Professor Haverkamp previously served as the U.S. State Department\u2019s Ambassador and Special Representative for Environment and Water Resources, where in 2016 she led the successful negotiations of the International Civil Aviation Organization\u2019s landmark CORSIA agreement to control global greenhouse gas emissions and the Kigali HFC-phasedown amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Ms. Haverkamp also directed the Environmental Defense Fund's International Climate Program, and served as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources in the Executive Office of the President, and held posts at the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice. She has taught at Cornell Law School, George Washington University\u2019s law school and Johns Hopkins graduate school, and has served on USTR's Trade and Environment Policy Advisory Committee and a number of nonprofit boards. But emerging evidence suggests that perceptions of intragroup conflict are often not uniform, shared, or static. These findings suggest important questions about the microfoundations of intragroup conflict: Where does conflict within teams originate? And how does it evolve over time? We address these and other questions in three abductive studies. We consider four origination points\u2014an individual, dyad, subgroup, or team\u2014and three evolutionary trajectories\u2014conflict continuity, contagion, and concentration. Study 1, a qualitative study of narrative accounts, and Study 2, a longitudinal social networks study of student teams, reveal that fewer than 30 percent of teams experience team-level conflict. Instead, conflict more commonly originates and persists at individual, dyadic, or subgroup levels. Study 2 further demonstrates that traditional psychometric intragroup conflict scales mask the existence of these various origins and trajectories of conflict. Study 3, a field study of manufacturing teams, reveals that individual and dyadic task conflict origins positively predict team performance, whereas traditional intragroup task conflict measures negatively predict team performance.
