The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.

Historically, research and creative practice have been constructed as "opposites." This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an "applied art." Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases, design can be a purely problem solving activity, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.

In its seventh year, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research, worked on by faculty, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.

Presentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.

Research Through Making Installations:

"Tap"
Adam Fure

"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making"
Ana Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule

"Dip and Dive in the D"
Claudia Wigger

"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments"
Wes McGee, Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov

"Post Rock"
Meredith Miller and Thom Moran

Grant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:

Benjamin Ball, Lead Artist and Principal, Ball-Nogues Studio
Brooke Hodge, Deputy director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
Mark Lamster, Architecture critic, The Dallas Morning News

This exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15.

The Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. Exhibition hours are Thursday to Sunday from 3:00-7:00pm unless otherwise noted.

About University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice, advancing global engagement, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report), Master of Science in Architecture, Master of Urban Planning, Master of Urban Design, and PhD programs.
Abstract:
We use more than 63,000 datapoints from a German used car market website to document systematic and substantial price drops at vintage (= year of first registration) thresholds and 10,000 km odometer marks. The latter finding replicates the findings in Lacetera et al. (2012), whereas the first dimension cannot be analyzed with their US data because only German cars have such legally mandated and regulated “birthdates”. Hence we have the unique opportunity to study the presence of coarse information processing within the same dataset and decision problem but across two separate domains. We document that discontinuities in these two domains are of comparable size. While Lacetera et al. (2012) explain
their result with a left-digit bias in the processing of numerical information, vintage discontinuities cannot be explained by this. We propose a slightly more general model of information prominence and availability bias to accommodate our findings.
We continue to show evidence from a natural field experiment in another online market to disentangle the effects of inattention and "standard" search costs to such discontinuities. We finally document similar discontinuities in German wage data and show that these disontinuities are linked to economically important outcomes like job satisfaction and job search.",

Check back here on the day of the event for viewing access.

Join the conversation: #policytalks

On September 11, 2001, our security environment changed forever. For the first time, a non-state actor, al Qaida, had inflicted significant damage on a state. In one hour and 17 minutes, 19 terrorists murdered 2977 people from more than 90 countries and inflicted tens of billions of dollars of damage on the United States. Hear how the rise of non-state actors with global reach, like al Qaida and ISIS, has significantly complicated an already difficult international security environment.

From the speaker's bio:

General George W. Casey, Jr. served at the 36th Chief of Staff for the U. S. Army from April 10, 2007 to April 11, 2011. In his previous assigment, he was the Commander of the Multi-National Force - Iraq, a coalition of over thirty countries from July 1, 2004 to February 10, 2007. George Casey was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1970. Throughout his career, Casey has served on operational assignments in Germany, Italy, Egypt, Southwest Asia, and the United States. He has commanded at every level from platoon to division. General Casey holds a Master's degree in International Relations from Denver University and has served as a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States.
For more information please visit http://fordschool.umich.edu/events/2016/general-george-w-casey-jr
Around the Arabophone Mediterranean, the 10th century (CE) witnessed the rise of a new kind of human who needed a new kind of humanism. They were self-made men and women -- merchants, barley-mongers, and cotton importers (among others) -- who were dubbed with the neologism “new money” (dhul tarif) or “merit-folk” (dhul-hasab), and when that did not ring a bell, the phrase "neither royalty nor rabble." Defined by negation, they existed in a boundary condition on the selvages: beneath the nobility, and having risen from humble, often stigmatized, origins. This paper explores their vulnerability and the emergence of a kind of public humanism that saturated the lives of this mercantile sub-nobility with symbolic resources to project subjectivity, as well as political and poetic leverage in society. This new "adab" humanism enabled them to come together as a public around issues of common concern, such as the essence of personhood, dignity, and leadership, and push back against the state.
This paper investigates the ways in which multicultural rhetoric situates black-white mixed-race individuals and their families as a bridge between disparate groups and ideologies. Using Bill de Blasio’s New York City Mayoral campaign in 2013 as a case study, I highlight specific media moments in which de Blasio’s children and his interracial marriage to a black woman are deployed as symbols of political (and by extension, racial) futurity. The key questions of this paper ask: How was mixed-race as a symbol deployed in the de Blasio campaign, particularly in the context of the family? What specifically did mixed-race symbolize in this political sphere? Did de Blasio's family fight back against essentialized multicultural ideals or simply deploy them to capture the minority vote? In answering these questions I conduct a close reading of de Blasio’s well-known TV advertisement featuring his then 15-year-old son Dante, and put it in conversation with persistent racisms in the form of police brutality, an issue that was central to de Blasio’s campaign. This work engages topics at the intersection of critical mixed-race studies, performance studies, and visual culture, drawing upon and contesting current research that places mixed-race people at the forefront of a changing American demographic and political climate.

The Black Humanities Collective (BHC) is an interdisciplinary graduate student organization at the University of Michigan that fosters a community of scholars invested in the intellectual, professional, and social growth and development of students across disciplines whose research interests focus on the African Diaspora.
