"description":"In this talk I will present our recent work on utilizing non-Hermitian engineering in order to tailor nonlinear optical responses. I will describe how the interplay between different nonlinear processes, gain and\/or loss can lead to several novel effects having potential practical applications. In particular, I will discuss three relevant topics: single mode supersymmetric laser arrays, loss-enabled unidirectional frequency conversion in optical wave-mixing setups, and synthetic saturable absorbers in bosonic nonlinear waveguide arrays. \r\n\r\nBio: Ramy El-Ganainy received his PhD, in 2009, from the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL), University of Central Florida. After a postdoctoral period at the University of Toronto and Max Planck Institute for the physics of complex systems, he joined the Department of Physics at Michigan Technological University (MTU) as an assistant professor where he is also affiliated with the Henes Center for Quantum Phenomena. His research work focuses on investigating different aspects of complex light wave dynamics.",

"description":"In this talk, Professor Sikkink draws on material from her forthcoming book Making Human Rights Work: Evidence for Hope. Recently there has been a surge of pessimism about the legitimacy and effectiveness of human rights law, institutions, and movements. Sikkink argues that transformations in the world generated by human rights ideas and activism have paradoxically clouded our ability to evaluate and measure progress because we now know more and care more about human rights issues than even before. To engage in a more productive debate, the nature of the critique, definitions of terms, and methods being used to measure progress all need to be clarified. Professor Sikkink examines these issues, and argues that careful issue-by-issue examination of the evidence on human rights progress and decline offers a more complex and hopeful picture than that suggested by the pessimists. \r\n\r\nKathryn Sikkink is the Ryan Family Professor of Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School of Government, and the Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Sikkink works on international norms and institutions, transnational advocacy networks, the impact of human rights law and policies, and transitional justice. Her publications include The Justice Cascade: How Human Rights Prosecutions are Changing World Politics (awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Center Book Award, and the WOLA\/Duke University Award); Mixed Signals: U.S. Human Rights Policy and Latin America; Activists Beyond Borders: Advocacy Networks in International Politics (co-authored with Margaret Keck and awarded the Grawemeyer Award for Ideas for Improving World Order, and the ISA Chadwick Alger Award for Best Book in the area of International Organizations); and The Persistent Power of Human Rights: From Commitment to Compliance, (co-edited with Thomas Risse and Stephen Ropp). She holds an MA and Ph.D. from Columbia University. Sikkink has been a Fulbright Scholar in Argentina and a Guggenheim fellow. She is a member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the editorial board of the International Studies Quarterly, International Organization, and the American Political Science Review.",

"description":"Reactions involving the selective activation and subsequent functionalization of C-H bonds have a high synthetic value because of their economic and ecological benefits. Despite many advances in addressing reactivity and refining mechanistic understanding, catalytic enantioselective transformations remain very challenging. The often required harsh reaction conditions, the use of uncommon ligand systems or bar metal salts have hampered developments in this area. The development of efficient ligands is crucial to success for asymmetric reactions. The presentation will cover enantiotopic functionalizations of C(sp3)-H bonds using Pd(0) complexes. Moreover, the development of chiral cyclopentadienyls (Cpx) as enabling ligand platform will be presented. Equipped with these Cpx ligands, a variety of late transition-metals are competent catalysts for enantioselective C-H activations. Several examples illustrate their utility for a streamlined access to functionalized chiral building blocks.\nNicolai Cramer (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne)",

"description":"The uniform spanning tree on Z2 is just one point of a two-parameter family of measures on \"essential spanning forests\" in Z2. These are spanning forests with a positive density of component trees, each with two ends. These measures first appeared (in disguised form) in work of Carroll\/Speyer on the cube recurrence, and work of Fomin on the loop-erased walk.\r\n\r\nWe explain how these measures arise naturally in the study of the graph Laplacian (for planar graphs). We then construct scaling limits of spanning forest processes on multiply connected domains with fixed boundary connections and paths having prescribed homotopy type. The resulting limit objects are singular measured foliations. Speaker(s): Richard Kenyon (Brown University)",
