Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans, whose work he knew in New York, and the Surrealism of André Breton, who visited Mexico around 1940.

Although not strictly Surrealist, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition, drawn from UMMA’s collections, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.

**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm, CLOSED Mondays
Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect, immersed in the everyday, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings, material specs, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.

Through speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression, including, for example, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper, with its ability to mask, transform, or animate a space, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.
Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.
In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016), a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.

The notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. Versteeg says, “As the nature of the images presented by the work is random, the artist assumes both all and no responsibility for their presence and content.”

**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm, CLOSED Mondays
The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests, a keen appreciation of form, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts, exhibited together for the first time, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators, and their commitment to public education.",

Learning to navigate relationships with friends, classmates, and family can be even more challenging as girls and boys also begin to explore their identity. The Feelings through Fiction Summer 2016 Group uses a book club format to create a safe space for participants to discuss ideas and feelings common to kids their age. By the end of the eight week group, participants should be better in tune with their feelings and how to manage them, how to understand others and work through conflict, and better able to deal with challenging social situations.
Registration is required.
2016 Olin Sewall Pettingill All-Camp Lecture in Natural History

Forensic entomology is a branch of science that focuses on the trace evidence of insect and arthropod activity during legal investigations. It includes three branches, the most famous of which is medico-criminal entomology, or the study of insects that help to provide information useful in cases of human, animal, and livestock abuse, neglect, and questionable death. Three main models are employed for this work: maggot growth rate models, accumulated degree-day models, and ecological succession models. A skilled forensic entomologist will use all three models to assess a situation and then work backwards through time to help law enforcement and medical physicians piece together information.

In this lecture, Dr. Sibyl Bucheli will review the history of forensic entomology, the mathematical foundation of all the models, and briefly discuss future direction in forensic entomology. She will also highlight some of the casework in which she has been involved including:

* Case-making caterpillars and the human DNA clues they preserved
* Insect succession on a human cadaver during the cooler months in Texas
* The infamous Swearengen vs. the state of Texas case
* Human lung myiasis

Please note: This lecture contains graphic images of human decomposition.

This event is free and open to the public.
Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Lee Segarra, but in many ways it’s much more than that: it’s a young woman leaving her indelible stamp on the American folk tradition. If you’re listening to her new album, "Small Town Heroes," odds are you’re part of the riff raff, and these songs are for you. “It’s grown into this bigger idea of feeling like we really associate with the underdog,” says Alynda. A 26-year-old of Puerto Rican descent whose slight frame belies her commanding voice, she grew up in the Bronx, where she developed an early appreciation for doo-wop and Motown from the neighborhood’s longtime residents. At 17 she hitched her way to the West Coast, then roamed the south before ultimately settling in New Orleans. “The community I found in New Orleans was open and passionate. The young artists were really inspiring to me,” she says. “Apathy wasn’t a part of that scene. And then the year after I first visited, Katrina happened, and I went back and saw the pain and hardship that all of the people who lived there had gone through. It made we want to straighten out my life and not wander so much. The city gave had given me an amazing gift with music, and it made me want to settle there and be a part of it and help however I could.” Her songs belong to no particular time or place, but rather to all of us—to the riff raff. The exhibit, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes, ancient and modern, and in a number of different languages.

The Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. As a self-taught artist, Kohli is not bound to school taught rules but rather follows instinct and spontaneity. This also allows her to freely create her own processes. Moments of introspection and feelings of acceptance are what Kohli wishes to offer viewers of her work, and these goals are inspired by her deep love of spirituality and Bikram yoga.
David Zinn has been drawing on sidewalks for well over a decade, using chalk and charcoal to create anamorphic 3D creatures which, when viewed at a precise angle, appear to exist in the real world. They often incorporate parts of the landscape and found objects, such as cracks in concrete or leaves on the ground. He is inspired by a desire to place cheerful art underfoot in unexpected places and to embrace the temporary nature of all things. For this exhibit, photographs of his street art installations will be on display. Zinn is a lifelong Michigander with a degree in creative writing from the U-M Residential College, and he worked for many years as a children’s radio host on WCBN and Michigan Radio. Zinn will also give an artist demonstration alongside a musical performance by Magdalen Fossum in the University Hospital Courtyard on Thurs, July 21, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 pm.",

Many different styles of alternative bindings and printing methods will be shown that often push the boundaries of traditional books and, in the process, become art objects. The show will also include mixed media sculptural pieces by Ray Wetzel and Phillip Dewey. The Michigan and Ohio book artists include Char Bacon, Ruth Bardenstein, Elizabeth Begue, Barbara Brown, Cecilia Escobar, Alvey Jones and Norma Penchansky-Glasser.",
