        "description":"Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature\u2019s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\r\n\r\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region\u2019s indigenous people. Without regular fire, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \r\n\r\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts, probing its rich history, examining its critical ecological mechanisms, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire, a carrier of the torch.",

        "description":"The pressure to produce scholarship that\u2019s relevant and publicly engaged comes as a welcome reproach and corrective to the elitism and insulation of academia. Yet, what is the cost of such a product-driven mindset with its embeddedness in market ideologies and neoliberal deliverables? How do the logics that subsidize this \u201cWestern\u201d enterprise marginalize divergent voices and sideline alternative methods? Turning to the rabbis of late antiquity and early modern Spinoza, opens us to seeing our particular academic enterprises and, more broadly still, the state of being human, differently. As such, research produced by these faulty methods fails to provide insight that could dismantle unjust systems in STEM education. Equitable research methods in Discipline Based Education Research (DBER) are necessary for equity-centered research and teaching.\r\n\r\nIn this talk U-M Postdoctoral Fellow Paulette Vincent-Ruz (she\/ella) will present:\r\n1.) The \u201cResources for Equitable Activation of Chemical Thinking Framework\u201d, a framework she proposed to center equity theories in DBER.\r\n2.)         "description":"ISR Insights Speaker Series\r\nThe Trouble with Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality\r\nThursday, February 24 at 12pm ET via Zoom \r\n\r\nSpeaker: Erin Cech, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan; Faculty Associate, Population Studies Center\r\n\r\n\u201cFollow your passion\u201d is a popular mantra for career decision-making in the United States. In this talk, Cech will discuss her research on this ubiquitous cultural narrative that she call the \u201cpassion principle.\u201d The passion principle is rooted in tensions between postindustrial capitalism and cultural norms of self-expression and is compelling to college-educated career aspirants and workers because passion is presumed to motivate the hard work required for success while providing opportunities for meaning and self-expression. Although passion-seeking seems like a promising option for individuals hoping to avoid drudgery in their labor force participation, she argues that the passion principle has a dark side: it reinforces socio-economic disadvantages and occupational segregation among career aspirants and workers in the aggregate and helps reproduce an exploited, overworked white-collar labor force. These findings have implications for cultural notions of \u201cgood work\u201d popular in higher education and the US workforce and raises broader questions about what it means when becoming a dedicated labor force participant feels like an act of self-fulfillment.",

        "description":"ABSTRACT:\r\nRecent breathtaking advances in machine learning beckon to their applications in a wide range of real-world autonomous systems. However, for safety-critical settings such as agile robotic control in hazardous environments, we must confront several key challenges before widespread deployment. Most importantly, the learning system must interact with the rest of the autonomous system (e.g., highly nonlinear and non-stationary dynamics) in a way that safeguards against catastrophic failures with formal guarantees. In addition, from both computational and statistical standpoints, the learning system must incorporate prior knowledge for efficiency and generalizability.\r\n \r\nIn this talk, I will present progress towards establishing a unified framework that fundamentally connects learning and control. First, I motivate the benefit and necessity of such a unified framework by the Neural-Control Family, a family of nonlinear deep-learning-based control methods with not only stability and robustness guarantees but also new capabilities in agile robotic control. Then I will discuss two unifying interfaces between learning and control: (1) meta-adaptive control, and (2) competitive online control. Both interfaces yield settings that jointly admit both learning-theoretic and control-theoretic guarantees.\r\n\r\nBIO:\r\nGuanya Shi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. He received a B.E. in mechanical engineering with a dual degree in economics from Tsinghua University in 2017. He was a deep learning research intern at NVIDIA in 2020. His research interests are centered around the intersection of machine learning and control theory, spanning the entire spectrum from theory and foundation, algorithm design, to real-world agile robotic control. Guanya was the recipient of several awards, including the Simoudis Discovery Prize from Caltech and the Rising Star in Data Science from the University of Chicago.",

        "description":"This session will explore privilege as it relates to dominant identities and discuss how one\u2019s privilege has systemic advantages regardless if earned or aware. Participants will receive a basic introduction to privilege followed by an interactive activity that will identify individual areas of systemic advantage based on social group affiliation. The participants who would gain the most from this session are those who are willing to go beyond their comfort zone and engage in difficult conversations that will not only challenge them to be more conscious of their behaviors, but also serve as motivation for social change. This session is not intended to target anyone\u2019s identity or make folks feel guilty about their privilege(s); rather, make them aware of their personal advantages and hopefully inspire them to be more inclusive. A brave space will be created so participants can engage in dialogue and not feel judged or targeted.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nIdentify common advantaged identities\nUnderstand their own privilege(s) based on association with various social identity groups\nReflect on personal experiences where privilege was consciously or unconsciously manifested in their daily interactions\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master\u2019s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows.
