Consequently, there is an increasing concern if these decisions can be trusted to be correct, reliable, fair, and safe, especially under adversarial attacks. How then can we deliver on the promise of the benefits of AI but address these scenarios that have life-critical consequences for people and society? In short, how can we achieve trustworthy AI?\r\n\r\nUnder the umbrella of trustworthy computing, there is a long-established framework employing formal methods and verification techniques for ensuring trust properties like reliability, security, and privacy of traditional software and hardware systems. Just as for trustworthy computing, formal verification could be an effective approach for building trust in AI-based systems. However, the set of properties needs to be extended beyond reliability, security, and privacy to include fairness, robustness, probabilistic accuracy under uncertainty, and other properties yet to be identified and defined. Further, there is a need for new property specifications and verification techniques to handle new kinds of artifacts, e.g., data distributions, probabilistic programs, and machine learning-based models that may learn and adapt automatically over time. This talk will pose a new research agenda, from a formal methods perspective, for us to increase trust in AI systems.\r\n---\r\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Wing joined Columbia in 2017 as the inaugural Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute. Prior to Columbia, Dr. Wing was Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research, served on the faculty and as department head in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, and served as Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Wing\u2019s research contributions have been in the areas of trustworthy AI, security and privacy, specification and verification, concurrent and distributed systems, programming languages, and software engineering. Her 2006 seminal essay, titled \"Computational Thinking,\u2019\u2019 is credited with helping to establish the centrality of computer science to problem-solving in fields where previously it had not been embraced and thereby influencing K-12 and university curricula worldwide. \r\n\r\nShe is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Wing received distinguished service awards from the Association for Computing Machinery and the Computing Research Association and an honorary doctorate degree from Link\u00f6ping University, Sweden. In this talk, novel small aperture ultrasound transducers are presented for advanced intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS), intravenous sonothrombolysis, localized tissue ablation and drug delivery. In specific, high frequency (40-60 MHz) micromachined piezoelectric composite transducers and arrays with broad bandwidth (-6 dB fraction bandwidth of ~ 80%) were developed and integrated into 3-Fr catheters for intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging. Dual frequency transducers and arrays (6.5 MHz\/30 MHz, 3 MHz\/30 MHz) were also successfully demonstrated for contrast enhanced intravascular superharmonic imaging (or acoustic angiography) toward detection of plaque vulnerability. For the case of intravenous thrombolysis, small aperture (diameter <2 mm) sub-MHz forward-looking transducers were successfully demonstrated, in-vitro, for microbubbles\/nanodroplets-mediated sonothrombolysis. Other transducer techniques such as small aperture high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transducers, laser ultrasound transducers and dual-mode transducers were also investigated for localized tissue ablation, drug delivery and intravascular sonothrombolysis. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of ultrasound transducers are discussed for advanced ultrasound imaging, therapy, and drug delivery.\r\n\r\nBiography: \r\nDr. Xiaoning Jiang is a Dean F. Duncan Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a University Faculty Scholar at North Carolina State University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and an Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Duke University. Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University (1997) and his postdoctoral training from the Pennsylvania State University (1997-2001). He was the Chief Scientist and Vice President for TRS Technologies, Inc. prior to joining NC State in 2009. Dr. Jiang is the author and co-author of two books, six book chapters, nine issued US Patents, 150 peer reviewed journal papers and over 120 conference papers on piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, ultrasound for medical imaging and therapy, drug delivery, ultrasound NDT\/NDE, smart materials and structures and M\/NEMS.
