In this talk, I tell the story of the applied physics challenges that needed to be overcome to achieve these milestones and the strategy our team followed. To help understand the story, several key physics principles of inertial fusion will be presented, and I will try and dispel any confusion about what the terms burning, ignition, and gain mean in the context of inertial fusion research.\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker: \r\nOmar Hurricane is Chief Scientist for the inertial confinement fusion program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a position he\u2019s held since 2014. Omar completed his PhD in Physics at UCLA in 1994 where he remained as a postdoc doing plasma theory until 1998. In 2009, Omar was awarded the Department of Energy E.O. Lawrence Award for National Security and Nonproliferation for solving a long-standing nuclear weapons anomaly. While analyses such as lipids, isotopes, and DNA are well-established, recently developed protein analysis offers new insights. The combination of species- and tissue-specific information provided by amino acid sequences have been critical in clarifying which animals, or animal products, were consumed by archaeological populations. While protein analysis offers new lines of evidence, working with ancient materials requires specific laboratory and data analysis protocols in order to authenticate the age and reliability of the results. Recently, this this method has been used to illuminate the spread of milk use on the Bronze Age Eurasian steppe and beyond. We will develop our own \u201cSelf-Care Bingo\u201d boards as a culminating activity and participants will be invited to do their best to complete bingo on their board throughout the rest of the month. Participants will be invited back at the end of the month (or beginning of April) to celebrate and share their joys and challenges in community.\r\n\r\nThis workshop will kick off a month-long series of activities related to practicing self-care and cultivating communities of care in the process. Each week participants will receive an email with resources, tips, and tools for incorporating self-care into their daily lives.
