The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.

Historically, research and creative practice have been constructed as "opposites." This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an "applied art." Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases, design can be a purely problem solving activity, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.

In its seventh year, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research, worked on by faculty, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.

Presentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.

Research Through Making Installations:

"Tap"
Adam Fure

"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making"
Ana Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule

"Dip and Dive in the D"
Claudia Wigger

"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments"
Wes McGee, Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov

"Post Rock"
Meredith Miller and Thom Moran

Grant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:

Benjamin Ball, Lead Artist and Principal, Ball-Nogues Studio
Brooke Hodge, Deputy director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
Mark Lamster, Architecture critic, The Dallas Morning News

This exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15.

The Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor. Exhibition hours are Thursday to Sunday from 3:00-7:00pm unless otherwise noted.

About University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice, advancing global engagement, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report), Master of Science in Architecture, Master of Urban Planning, Master of Urban Design, and PhD programs.
Whereas seeking the generic affiliations and mixtures of Religio Medici has helped us to make sense of certain features of its dazzling intricacies, it has neglected to consider the shape in which the eight extant manuscripts have come to us. Especially in two manuscripts whose provenance links them closely to Browne himself, the text of Religio Medici is broken into smaller portions of prose than are found in the print editions from 1642 onward. Considered together with the fact that in the first manuscript stage of composition, but also in the 1643 authorized edition Browne divides his meditations by numbers rather than titles, this brokenness prompts us to consider the possibility that the mode if not the genres of Religio Medici was intended by the author and received by its earliest readers aphoristically.
No Más Bebés tells the story of a little-known but landmark event in reproductive justice, when a small group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Marginalized and fearful, many of these mothers spoke no English, and charged that they had been coerced into tubal ligation — having their tubes tied — by doctors during the late stages of labor. Often the procedure was performed after asking the mothers under duress.

The mothers’ cause was eventually taken up by a young Chicana lawyer armed with hospital records secretly gathered by a whistle-blowing doctor. In their landmark 1975 civil rights lawsuit, Madrigal v. Quilligan, they argued that a woman’s right to bear a child is guaranteed under the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade.

The filmmakers spent five years tracking down sterilized mothers and witnesses. Most were reluctant at first to come forward, but ultimately agreed to tell their story. Set against a debate over the impact of Latino immigration and overpopulation, and the birth of a movement for Chicana rights and reproductive choice, No Más Bebés revisits a powerful story that still resonates today.

Renee Tajima-Peña is an Academy Award nominated filmmaker whose credits include Who Killed Vincent Chin?, MY AMERICA...or Honk if You Love Buddha, and Calavera Highway. Her films have screened at the Cannes Sundance and Toronto film festivals and she has been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, USA Broad Fellowship, Alpert Award in the Arts for Film/Video, a Peabody and a Dupont-Columbia Award.

Tajima-Peña teaches social documentary at UCLA, where she is a professor of Asian American Studies, the director of the Center for EthnoCommunications and holds an endowed chair in Japanese American Studies. She never went to film school, but traces the origins as a filmmaker to her student activism. She was chair of the United Front Against Apartheid at Harvard, and while a student, made her first short film documenting the Socialist New Jewel Movement in Grenada. She has been deeply involved in filmmakers of color movements and started her career as a member of the Third World Newsreel film collective.

Presented by IRWG's Reproductive Justice Facutly Program, cosponsored by Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fellowship in Family Planning, Medical Students for Choice, Students for Choice, Department of Women's Studies, Law Students for Reproductive Justice, Latina/o Studies, The Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, Latino Law Students Association, Michigan Immigration and Labor Law Association, ACLU MLaw Chapter, and Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, The Michigan Journal of Race & Law.

Presented by IRWG's Reproductive Justice Faculty Program.
(Registration link under "Web and Social" at the bottom the page)

Gain inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in people. Join us at the Positive Links Speaker Series to learn from leading Positive Organizational scholars. Connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders at our receptions that immediately follow each session.

HOSTED BY: Gretchen Spreitzer, the Faculty Co-Director at the Center for Positive Organizations; the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration; and Professor of Management and Organizations at Michigan Ross.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Want to make a difference in your organization? In this session, Jerry Davis and Chris White (authors of Changing Your Company From the Inside Out) will provide a framework for advancing the initiatives that are important to you, your company, and the world.

JERRY DAVIS received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and taught at Northwestern and Columbia before moving to the University of Michigan, where he is the Wilbur K. Pierpont Collegiate Professor of Management and of Sociology. He has published widely in management, sociology, and finance. Books include Social Movements and Organization Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2005); Organizations and Organizing (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007); Managed by the Markets: How Finance Reshaped America (Oxford University Press, 2009); Changing your Company from the Inside Out: A Guide for Social Intrapreneurs (Harvard Business Review Press, 2015); and The Decline and Fall of the American Corporation (Berrett-Koehler, forthcoming). He is Editor of the Administrative Science Quarterly and Director of the Interdisciplinary Committee on Organization Studies (ICOS) at the University of Michigan.

Davis’s research is broadly concerned with the effects of finance on society. Recent writings examine how ideas about corporate social responsibility have evolved to meet changes in the structures and geographic footprint of multinational corporations; whether "shareholder capitalism" is still a viable model for economic development; how income inequality in an economy is related to corporate size and structure; why theories about organizations do (or do not) progress; how architecture shapes social networks and innovation in organizations; why stock markets spread to some countries and not others; and whether there exist viable organizational alternatives to shareholder-owned corporations in the United States.

CHRIS WHITE leads the Center for Positive Organizations at The University of Michigan. The Center helps leaders build high-performing organizations that bring out the best in people through ground-breaking research, educational programs and organizational partnerships. The Center won the 2012 Research Center Impact Award from The Academy of Management.

At the Ross School of Business, Chris co-developed and teaches the MBA class on Social Intrapreneurship, which has since been replicated in other top business schools. He also teaches in the Executive Education program on selling internally. Chris is co-author of Changing Your Company From the Inside Out: A Guide for Social Intrapreneurs (Harvard Business Review Press, 2015).

Chris has been leading and consulting to purpose-driven organizations for 15 years. His career has spanned the non-profit, corporate, and philanthropic sectors. His work has been featured by outlets including Fast Company, Inc., Forbes, CBS, The Huffington Post, and Talent Management Magazine.

Positive Links sessions take place at Michigan Ross, and are free and open to the public. Most sessions are live-streamed via a link from our Events page, and then a listing is added to our Videos page post-session. For more information, visit poslinksseries.com.

The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Diane and Paul Jones (Ross School of Business MBA 1975) for their generous gift in support of the 2015-2016 Positive Links Speaker Series.
It is generally acknowledged that the beginning of the “Thaw” epoch in Soviet literature was marked by the publication of Vladimir Pomerantsev’s article “On sincerity in literature” (December, 1953). There sincerity was interpreted not as a writer’s inclination to “open” his/her inner world to the public, but rather as a moral demand to critically represent the social environment and social conditions. This view acquired wide support in the milieu of reformatory-minded Soviet writers, especially those who specialized in children's literature. This talk is intended to discover what literary plots, images and devices were required and were really used in order to fulfill this moral and social duty and what peculiar and sometimes odd literary forms arose in response to the new imperatives.

Maria Maiofis is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the School of Advanced Research in the Humanities, Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. She is the author of Appeal to Europe: the Literary Society “Arzamas” and the Russian Modernization Project of 1815-1818 (in Russian, 2008), and a co-editor of volumes on the history of Soviet children’s and youth culture and education, most recently, Islands of Utopia: Social and Pedagogical Approaches to Modeling Post-WWII School (in Russian, 2015).",
