The Lectureship builds upon Dr. Gelehrter's career dedicated to promoting excellence in research, education, and care in medical genetics and will be an enduring legacy that continues to raise awareness about the importance of medical genetics and improve this vital field. \r\n\r\nJim Evans, MD, PhD, is the Bryson Distinguished Professor of Genetics and Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He directs Adult and Cancer Genetics Services and is clinically active in Medical Genetics and General Internal Medicine. He is Editor in Chief of Genetics in Medicine, the preeminent clinically focused Medical Genetics Journal and the official journal of The American College of Genetics and Genomics. Dr. Evans's research focus primarily on clinical applications of emerging genomic analytic technologies and how genetic information is used and perceived by patients, the public and medical professionals.\r\n \r\nHe has been involved in policy issues both nationally and internationally. Little experimental work exists on the mechanisms that mammals employ to deal with plant toxins or how some species such as the koala or Stephen\u2019s woodrat are capable of specializing on plants that contain high concentrations of toxins. In the last year the far right has seen mixed results, but immigration has played an important role for populist politicians on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, Islamic terrorism and the refugee issue has played a key role in raising the salience of the immigration issue. In the U.S., undocumented immigration from Latin America and the spread of immigrants to new regions of the country has also raised the salience of the issue.
