Allison Martino and Elizabeth Rauh, U-M History of Art doctoral candidates, gives short talks followed by Q & A.

Allison Martino, "Cloth, Chairs, and Key Chains:
The Re-Invention of Gye Nyame as a National Symbol of Ghana"

Adinkra is best known as a mourning cloth among the Akan of Ghana. Yet the role of adinkra in practices of remembrance extends far beyond funerals. Since at least the early 19th century, the Akan have printed adinkra cloth with distinct graphic designs evoking multiple meanings related to proverbs, historical narratives, and moral beliefs. Joining visual and verbal arts, adinkra is a dynamic form of communication that oscillates between expressing personal, cultural, and national identities. Ghanaians have innovated the form and meaning of adinkra over time to mark changing relationships to the past and envisions of future aspirations.

This presentation examines how Ghanaians have re-invented adinkra from a precolonial Akan cultural practice to represent national culture. Specifically, it analyzes the shifting meanings and contexts of gye Nyame, one of the most popular adinkra symbols. Often translated as “Except God,” gye Nyame is ubiquitous in Ghana today – ranging from plastic chairs and key chains to churches, currency notes, and tourist souvenirs. In tracing one motif across time and space, this talk reveals how Ghanaians have transformed gye Nyame and revitalized adinkra to resonate deeply in contemporary life.

Elizabeth Rauh, "The Colored Horizons of Karbala: Rafa Nasiri and Contemporary Printmaking in Late 1960s Iraq"

This presentation looks to Rafa Nasiri’s (1940-2013) printmaking practice and its early experimentation with printed Arabic script as the locus from which he stimulated and historicized the contemporary graphic arts movement in Iraq. Although conversant in pan-Arab and international socialist realist strategies from his training in printmaking at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing (1958-1963), Nasiri’s work in the 1960s offers experiments with global abstract expressionism and local religious prints. The need for educational programs and publications on the arts of Arab printing led Nasiri to travel around Iraq gathering popular printed textiles. Nasiri collected block printed (hafir al-tarsh) black and white calligraphic banners, which are carried in the streets during ‘Ashura and the holy month of Muharram, when mass pilgrimage processions overtake Shi‘i Muslim shrines in the cities of Karbala and Najaf. He then cut these popular prints and their pious poetic verses into separate cartouches and adhered them directly onto his abstract works.

Drawing upon communal rituals and public ceremonies moored Nasiri’s contemporary graphic art practice within Iraq’s historic printing technologies and social and religious practices. The collage-print series offered visual venerations of the Battle of Karbala (680 AD) as colorfully abstracted desert landscapes. Nestled within their references to that catastrophic landscape, the Shi‘i readymade prints associated Nasiri’s works with the ancient battle and its religious performances of dissent against injustice and oppression. By imprinting his compositions with prefabricated calligraphic texts, Nasiri elicited collective memories of Karbala and created a representational strategy counter to the new Baathist regime’s use of populist imagery. These works thus show how Rafa Nasiri marshaled Iraq’s historic printing technologies and social traditions to depict popular expressions of the metaphoric horizons of Karbala.",

One critical step in understanding why hybrid perovskite solar cells work so well is to determine the influence of defects on photon to current conversion process. I will present the advance in understanding the optoelectronic properties, unusual defect physics, and influence of defects on critical properties such as carrier diffusion length, charge recombination lifetime, carrier mobility and ion migration of solution processed perovskite materials. The discovery of the extraordinary properties enables new application of halide perovskite in radiation detection beyond solar cells. The recent
development of X-ray sensors, imagers, and gamma-ray spectrum detectors will be presented.
Jinsong Huang received his PhD degree in Material
Science and Engineering from the University of California-
Los Angeles in 2007.
Katherine Gentry: "Dynamic Interplay of Cytochrome P450 & Redox Partners"
Abstract: Cytochrome P450s (cytP450s) are a ubiquitous superfamily of enzymes that play a vital role in the metabolism of many substrates including over 70% of the drugs on the market. For each turn of its catalytic cycle, cytP450 requires two electrons from its redox partners: Cytochrome P450 Reductase (CPR) and cytochrome b5 (cytb5). We are interested in how these proteins interact with each other specifically in the presence of lipid membrane mimetics and in the presence of various substrates. Here we use NMR spectroscopy and other biophysical tools to characterize the effect membrane has on the interaction between cytb5 and cytochrome c, a model for cytP450. Our findings reveal the importance of studying these membrane proteins in a biologically relevant membrane mimetic both structurally and kinetically. We have also begun work on understanding how CPR and cytb5 compete for binding to cytP450 and unravelling the structural and dynamic basis for this competition. Our data reveals how substrates can help to modulate the interaction between the two redox partners and cytP450, starting to define a complete picture of this trio of proteins.

and

Brian Linhares: “Fragment-based identification and optimization of inhibitors targeting BCL6-co-repressor interactions.”
Abstract: Constitutively overexpressed B-Cell Lymphoma protein 6 (BCL6) is an oncogenic driver in various subtypes of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. In normal B-Cell physiology, BCL6 governs cell development and regulates affinity antibody maturation, through mediating the formation of transcription repression complexes. The N-terminal BTB domain of BCL6 (BCL6BTB) is responsible for dimerization and for recruitment of co-repressors, notably HDAC3-binding partner Silencing Mediator of Retinoic acid and Thyroid hormone (SMRT), via the Lateral Groove (LG), a unique structural motif of the BCL6-SMRT protein-protein binding interface. This site has therefore been promoted for pharmacological intervention, yet the development of potent, selective inhibitors with favorable drug-like properties has largely eluded campaigns to target BCL6. I will report the identification and optimization of a novel inhibitor scaffold of BCL6 BTB. Fragment-based screening identified a hit that binds at the LG, and structure determination of the fragment hit in complex with BCL6 BTB to high-resolution revealed the binding mode. Guided by the previously determined structure of BCL6BTB-SMRT BCL6 Binding Domain (SMRTBBD), structure-based drug design, in tandem with biophysical approaches, led an extensive investment in synthetic medicinal chemistry to target an adjacent pocket at the LG that is also occupied in BCL6BTB-SMRTBBD. Exploring substitutions to more fully occupy this pocket yielded small-molecule inhibitors with mid-micromolar affinity for BCL6BTB, which represents a 100-fold improvement in potency from the hit. As an inhibitor scaffold, our compounds may hold potential as chemical probes, and in scaffold hopping to aid in further inhibitor development",

We have developed a catalytic enantioselective allylic amination of unactivated alkenes via a [2,3]-rearrangement. In this method, a diimido-sulfur reagent serves as the source of nitrogen, and it reacts selectively with terminal alkenes through a hetero-ene reaction. The resulting ene adduct undergoes a Pd-catalyzed enantioselective [2,3]-rearrangement to generate chiral amines in high enantiomeric excess. Our approach is conceptually distinct from other enantioselective allylic amination strategies. The synthetic utility of our process is being explored by converting simple and inexpensive terminal alkenes into functional materials, such as the pharmaceutical drugs. Based on this chemistry, we have developed a copper-catalyzed enantioselective allylic alkylation of unactivated alkenes to generate internal alkenes with high regioselectivity and E-selectivity. We have also discovered regioselective and diastereoselective aminoarylations and aminothiolations of 1,3-dienes. These results represent a general strategy for functionalizing unsaturated hydrocarbons with aromatic, aliphatic, and vinyl Grignard reagents. As an extension of our approach to the catalytic allylic functionalization of unactivated terminal alkenes, we recently pursued the more challenging problem of catalytic asymmetric allylic functionalization of internal alkenes. We have developed an enantioselective, regioselective, and E/Z selective allylic oxidation of unactivated internal alkenes via a catalytic asymmetric hetero-ene reaction with an imido-sulfur oxidant.

Uttam Tambar (UT Southwestern Medical Center)",
