Tissue dynamics may include both passive remodeling of the extracellular matrix composition and organization, as well as the active response via changes in the amount, organization, and contractile response of smooth muscle cells. \u00a0Lack of adaptations in response to variable pressures may lead to structural instability in the female reproductive system, contributing to significant health problems, such as obstetric injury, preterm birth, and pelvic organ prolapse. The vagina is central to pelvic floor support; however, the relationship between vaginal extracellular matrix, smooth muscle contractility, and mechanical properties are not fully elucidated. In this talk, I will present our efforts to delineate the mechanical role of smooth muscle cells and potential interactions with elastic fibers in the murine vagina, and how these relationships evolve in a mouse model of pelvic organ prolapse and with reproductive age.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nDr. Kristin S. Miller is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University. Dr. Miller\u2019s research interests are focused on the mechanobiology of soft tissues, including evaluating the role of elastic fibers and contractility in the female reproductive system. Before joining Tulane, Dr. Miller conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University and received her PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2018, Kristin was awarded the NSF CAREER award to develop a biomechanical model that can predict how elastic fibers in the soft tissues of the female reproductive system changes in response to mechanical pressure. In this lecture series, Hannah Wittman, Gustavo Oliveira, and Susanna Hecht will explore the impacts of the Bolsonaro regime on food security and agroecology, on the conservation of the Amazon forest, and on international trade with China, as well as bright spots of resistance and innovation towards sustainability.\r\n\r\nDr. Gustavo de L.T. Oliveira | The geopolitics of Brazilian soy in the age of Bolsonaro and the US-China trade war\r\n\r\nSoy plays a major role in the development of Brazilian agribusiness, and in turn in Brazilian geopolitical power as well. It is the basis for much Brazilian land ownership in neighboring countries, and extension of political influence in Africa. It was also instrumental in Brazil\u2019s insertion into a \u201cnew multi-polar world order\u201d, balancing trade with China even while the US dollar and North Atlantic transnational companies maintained control over soybean markets. But recent events call for a reevaluation of the geopolitics of Brazilian soy. First, access to abundant Brazilian soy enabled China to withstand the trade war with the US, responding with counter-tariffs on US soy. But while this could have enabled Brazil to extract geopolitical gains, the election of Jair Bolsonaro as president of Brazil fractured the political power of the soy sector. While, soy farmers and truckers defend Bolsonaro\u2019s domestic and international agenda, restraining ties with China and accusing Europeans of blocking Brazilian development through environmentalist charades, soy processing and trading companies have broken with Bolsonaro, who undermines their efforts to attract Chinese capital for infrastructure construction in Brazil while projecting a palatable eco-modernist image of Brazilian agribusiness for European markets. She could not have foreseen the daunting challenges poised to thwart her vision: from white regulators and businesses anxious to cash in on Black success to self-proclaimed Negro Captains of Industry determined that they\u2014and not a woman\u2014would remain the avatars of Negro progress in a Jim Crow financial world. \r\n\r\nBiography: Shennette Garrett-Scott is committed to telling little-known stories of early Black business. She is an associate professor of history at Texas A&M University and the author of the multiple award-winning book Banking on Freedom: Black Women in U.S. Finance before the New Deal, published by Columbia University Press in 2019. While on Hudson\u2019s, Michelle has led enclosure design from concept through execution. Now based in Detroit, Michelle oversees Hudson\u2019s construction and is spearheading SHoP\u2019s continued efforts and commitment to Detroit. Michelle has additionally worked on diverse project types at SHoP, including adaptive re-use and public space on New York\u2019s East River Waterfront. Michelle received her M. Arch from Columbia University\u2019s GSAPP and B.A. in Art History from Emory University.\r\n\r\nAbout Ryan:\r\n\r\nRyan Schell is Senior Development Manager at Bedrock Detroit. Since joining the company in 2019, he has managed its flagship redevelopment of the site of the former J.L. Hudson\u2019s department store. This project will include over 1.5 million square feet of retail, event space, office, hotel, residential, public space, and parking, and will be the second tallest building in the State of Michigan and the first skyscraper built in Detroit in a generation. In his role, he oversees the project\u2019s strategic direction and partners with internal teams and external consultants to plan, program, design, and deliver a world-class product.
