Hudson\u2019s Department Store on Woodward Avenue, construction of the Renaissance Center and Joe Louis Arena, and the abandonment of Poletown and the Warehouse District. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege, philosophically as well as experientially, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\r\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans\u2019 voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors\u2019 lives, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. Drawing on the Museum\u2019s African art collection and complemented with national loans, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask\u2019s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity.
