Halow has been a Professor of Practice in Aerospace Engineering since May 1, 2019 after a distinguished career as an executive at Ford Motor Company. At Ford, he held numerous positions in engineering, manufacturing, and strategy and was the Chief Program Engineer of Expedition, Navigator, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, and Ranger at various points in his career.\r\n\r\nAt the University of Michigan, he created an Introduction to the Aerospace Enterprise course for primarily freshmen and sophomores, covering the aerospace industry, leadership, culture, and communication, and careers in aerospace.\r\n\r\nHe is launching an all-new Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and systems engineering leadership course series starting in fall, 2022. We effortlessly recognize not only objects and faces in our environment, but also other peoples\u2019 social interactions. The ability to perceive others\u2019 social interactions is critical for social trait judgement and ultimately guides how humans act in the social world. We recently identified a region that selectively represents others\u2019 social interactions in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) using controlled experiments with simple stimuli. However, it is unclear how social interactions are processed in the real world where they co-vary with many other sensory and social features. In this talk I will discuss new work using naturalistic video paradigms and novel machine learning analyses to understand how humans process social interactions in natural settings. We find that social interactions guide behavioral judgements and are selectively processed in the brain, even after controlling for the effects of other visual and social information. We investigate this hypothesis by using detrital geochronology and thermochronology of modern river sediments and Cenozoic foreland basin deposits to establish the relative timing of river capture and the onset of rapid erosion\/exhumation. Results rule out Pliocene river capture or Quaternary climate change as triggers for rapid exhumation, and instead point to a tectonic driver for extreme rock uplift rates. Quaternary megafloods (\u2265106 m3\/s) sourced from valley blocking glaciers may have played an important role in eroding rapidly uplifted rock, and in the geomorphic evolution of the Gorge and Tibetan plateau margin. We investigate the sedimentary record and hydraulics of outburst floods through the Gorge, with implications for erosion and deposition in the largest source-to-sink sedimentary system on Earth. In the high-elevation source region, hydraulic flood simulations, field observations, and flood sediment provenance studies suggest (1) great potential for megaflood erosion in the Gorge, and (2) a lasting impact of megaflood deposits on the morphology and both river and hillslope processes in mountain landscapes. Previous studies show that megafloods have significantly altered landscapes in the sedimentary transfer zone between the headwaters and deepwater Bengal Fan and deposited material >2000 km offshore. Our ongoing work seeks to integrate geologic and human perspectives on flooding, landscape change, and sedimentation throughout this system, including Indigenous knowledge.
