Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the \u201cAmerican Portrait.\u201d Saldamando\u2019s visual biographies, which use her friends, family, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\r\n\r\nOn November 2, 6:30-8pm, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over \/ Cuando Esto Termine*.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA\u2019s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando\u2019s practice employs tattooing, video, painting and drawing on canvas, wood, paper, and cloth. The work functions as homage, as well as documentation, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. A weird machine has its own peculiar instruction set and program semantics, designed by no one and existing entirely by accident. In this seminar, I will be demonstrating the utility of *genetic programming* (GP) as a technique for exploring the space of programs implicit in a particular variety of \"weird machine\": the variety exploited by *return-oriented programming* (ROP), a remote code execution technique that, over the past two decades, has been used by attackers to subvert the separation of writeable and executable memory imposed by various operating systems as a security feature. in 6th-century China. By focusing on the sarcophagus of Shi Jun or Wirkak (494-579 CE), a Sogdian immigrant from Central Asia, it explores a range of issues related to viticulture and wine making on the Silk Road, including the spread and transformation of Dionysian motifs, the entanglement between Buddhism and wine culture, and above all, the association of vineyard gardens with paradise.\r\n \r\n Jin Xu is an assistant professor of Art History and Asian Studies at Vassar College. He received his PhD in art history at the University of Chicago. His research has been focusing on religious and cultural exchanges on the Silk Road as reflected in Chinese art during the sixth and seventh centuries AD. His articles appear in journals such as the Burlington Magazine, the Journal of Asian Studies, and the Sino-Platonic Papers.
