Water is the lifeblood of civilizations, the center of cities, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing, quenching, and refreshing but has also been commodified, polluted, and politicized. From the Standing Rock, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin, to water shutoffs in Detroit, PFAs in Ann Arbor, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few), ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional, intergenerational, and collective knowledge sharing, discussion and action to protect.
Call for Work
Stamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care, sustainability, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”
Eligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday, August 19, 2022 →
Eligibility
Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline
The deadline for submitting work is Friday, August 19, 2022, 5pm, EST. A selection committee composed of students, faculty, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15, 2022 - January 14, 2023.Why posters & videos?
Posters can function as catalysts for change. For generations, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking, and designed to draw attention from passersby, posters can be conversation starters, invite people to pause, reflect, spread the word, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films, recorded performances, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries, museums, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment.
Context
Stamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social, political, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.
Join Weiser Diplomacy Center and American Academy of Diplomacy for a conversation with Ambassador Peter Bodde about his work helping lead international response in disaster areas, especially his involvement in earthquake response in Pakistan and Nepal as well as flood relief and making communities more resilient against flooding.

*From the speaker's bio: *

Peter William Bodde, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, was confirmed by the Senate as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya on November 19, 2015. Ambassador Bodde arrived in Tunis, Tunisia on January 21, 2016 (as Embassy operations in Libya are currently suspended). Ambassador Bodde served as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal from 2012 to September 2015. As such, he received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for his work promoting democracy, protecting U.S. citizens, and helping lead the international response to the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

Ambassador Bodde is a strong leader who fosters productive interagency cooperation while maintaining high staff morale. His skills have proven invaluable in leading the USG response to the Nepal earthquake. His extensive experience in nascent democracies, especially in South Asia, makes him well qualified to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya. He is particularly well regarded for his extraordinary efforts in mentoring his younger colleagues across interagency lines.

Ambassador Bodde previously served as Assistant Chief of Mission for Assistance Transition at U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq (2010-2012) and as Ambassador to Malawi at U.S. Embassy Lilongwe (2008-2010). He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at both U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan (2006-2008) and at U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal (1994-1997), as well as Principal Officer at the U.S Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany (2002-2006). Prior to that, he served as Director of the Department’s Office of Management Policy (2000-2002), and as Administrative Counselor at U.S. Embassy New Delhi, India (1997-2000). Ambassador Bodde also served as Administrative Officer at both U.S. Embassy Copenhagen, Denmark (1990-1994) and at U.S. Embassy Sofia, Bulgaria (1988-1990). His early assignments in the Foreign Service included serving as Special Assistant in the Department’s Bureaus of Diplomatic Security and Administration, as Budget and Fiscal Officer, U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, and as Consular Officer, U.S. Embassy Georgetown, Guyana. Before the Foreign Service, he worked for the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Bodde earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1976. He has won numerous Department performance awards. He speaks German, Bulgarian, and Nepali.",

In her talk, Grace En-Yi Ting reflects on what it means to read Kawakami’s work now—from multilingual spaces of longing tied to Hong Kong and Taiwan and in a world broadly defined by new forms of distance and loss. What are the texts, reading practices, and languages that find us and how might they accompany us in these times?

Grace En-Yi Ting (Ph.D. Yale University) is an Assistant Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She specializes in queer and feminist approaches to Japanese literature and popular culture. Other work deals with race and gender in the academy and transnational discourses of queerness and translation across Japanese, Sinophone, and Asian American literary contexts. Her recent article “Ekuni Kaori’s Tears in the Night: The Brilliance of Queer Readings for Japanese Literary Studies” (2021) received Honorable Mention for the Kenneth B. The MFP seeks to identify indicators of precarious employment and labor exploitation in the farmworker community and relate this understanding to farmworker’s psychosocial, occupational, environmental, and social risk factors. The MFP also aims to identify gaps in service provision and policy and programmatic needs, incorporating recommendations from the farmworker community to address their current working and living conditions. This seminar will provide an overview of the development and implementation of the MFP, the challenges faced, and preliminary findings and policy implications.

About Dr. Handal

Alexis J. Handal is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the UM School of Public Health. Her research expertise is in occupational and environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, social epidemiology, and global health; in particular, she works with Latinx and Indigenous populations in Latin America and in the United States. Dr. Handal studies the impact of large-scale agricultural production on the health of workers and surrounding communities, and with a particular focus on the health of female workers and pregnant workers and their families. Her community-engaged and participatory research approach uses a health equity lens focusing on understanding the interconnection between chemical exposures, and social and work stressors and supports in the context of precarious employment, on worker health and on maternal and child health and development. Alexis appreciates and promotes the use of community-based participatory research (CBPR) and mixed methods approaches in epidemiologic research. Over the past two decades, Dr. Handal has worked in Ecuador studying the impact of export-led flower production on maternal and child health and child development. Her early studies identified important factors that may adversely impact child health and development such as toxic exposures, maternal stress, and nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition. Her current NIEHS-funded birth cohort study, SEMILLA (Study of Environmental Exposure of Mothers and Infants Impacted by Large-Scale Agriculture) (R011ES026603), in collaboration with Dr. Fadya Orozco at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, examines the impact of fungicidal exposure and other critical social stressors associated with the presence of the flower industry on pregnancy and subsequent infant health. Dr. Handal also leads the Michigan Farmworker Project (MFP), in collaboration with Dr. Lisbeth Iglesias-Rios (post-doctoral fellow). The MFP is a CBPR program that examines the complex working and living conditions of farmworkers and their families in Michigan and the impact on farmworker health and well-being.
Sexual violence, as a human rights and public policy issue, has emerged as a critical area of scholarly inquiry in local and global contexts. Studies by the World Health Organization, World Bank, and others point to the macroeconomic impact of gender-based violence on survivors’ health and well-being as well as on public budgets, through healthcare expenditures, legal services, and diminished educational outcomes. Does financial inclusion and equitable access to care change women’s experiences of sexual violence in private and public? How do we assess policies which empower women by eliminating lending bias, but which purportedly frame women as vulnerable rather than as risk-taking, ensuring sexual/financial safety through stereotypically female workspaces? Drawing from a mixed-methods study of rape victims’ public suicides in postcolonial India, this interdisciplinary blue bag lunch talk will explore the insights it can offer to our gendered understandings of violence, vulnerability and risk, and discuss innovative policy measures.
The last fifteen years have witnessed a "democratic recession." Democracies previously thought to be well-established--Hungary, Poland, Brazil, and even the United States--have been threatened by the rise of ultra-nationalist and populist leaders who pay lip-service to the will of the people while daily undermining the freedom and pluralism that are the foundations of democratic governance. The possibility of democratic collapse where we least expected it has added new urgency to the age-old inquiry into how democracy, once attained, can be made to last.

In *Democracy in Hard Places,* Scott Mainwaring and Tarek Masoud bring together a distinguished cast of contributors to illustrate how democracies around the world continue to survive even in an age of democratic decline. Collectively, they argue that we can learn much from democratic survivals that were just as unexpected as the democratic erosions that have occurred in some corners of the developed world.

-Oxford University Press, 2022

Volume Editors:

Scott Mainwaring's research and teaching focus on democratization and authoritarianism, political parties and party systems, and Latin American politics. His work with Aníbal Pérez-Liñán, *Democracies and Dictatorships in Latin America: Emergence, Survival, and Fall* (Cambridge University Press, 2013) won the best book prizes of the Comparative Politics section of the American Political Science Association and of the Political Institutions section of the Latin American Studies Association. Mainwaring was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. In April 2019, *PS: Political Science and Politics* listed him as one of the 50 most cited political scientists in the world. He served as the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor for Brazil Studies and as faculty co-chair of the Brazil Studies program at Harvard University from 2016 to 2019.

Tarek Masoud is the co-editor of the *Journal of Democracy* of the National Endowment for Democracy, and serves as the Faculty Director of the Kennedy School's Middle East Initiative and the Initiative on Democracy in Hard Places. His research focuses on political development in Arabic-speaking and Muslim-majority countries. He is the author of *Counting Islam: Religion, Class, and Elections in Egypt* (Cambridge University Press, 2014); *The Arab Spring: Pathways of Repression and Reform* with Jason Brownlee and Andrew Reynolds (Oxford University Press, 2015); and several articles and book chapters. He is a 2009 Carnegie Scholar, a trustee of the American University in Cairo, and the recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation and the Paul and Daisy Soros foundation, among others.

Chapter Authors:

Rachel Beatty Riedl is the Director of Cornell's Einaudi Center. Her research interests include institutional development in new democracies, local governance and decentralization policy, authoritarian regime legacies, and religion and politics, with a regional focus in Sub-Saharan Africa. Previously, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Faculty Fellow in the Institute for Policy Research, and Director of the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University. She has also been a visiting fellow at the Yale Program on Democracy, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. She was a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served as Chair of the Democracy and Autocracy section of the American Political Science Association. Riedl is co-host of the podcast "Ufahamu Africa," featuring weekly episodes of news highlights and interviews about life and politics on the African continent.

Dan Slater specializes in the politics and history of enduring dictatorships and emerging democracies, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. He is the author of *From Development to Democracy: The Transformations of Modern Asia* with Joseph Wong (Princeton University Press, 2022); *Ordering Power: Contentious Politics and Authoritarian Leviathans in Southeast Asia* (Cambridge University Press, 2010); and co-editor of *Southeast Asia in Political Science: Theory, Region, and Qualitative Analysis* (Stanford University Press, 2008).

This even will be held both in person and webcast via Zoom. Registration is required to attend the Zoom webinar at: http://myumi.ch/y9Zwy

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.
