Water is the lifeblood of civilizations, the center of cities, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing, quenching, and refreshing but has also been commodified, polluted, and politicized. From the Standing Rock, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin, to water shutoffs in Detroit, PFAs in Ann Arbor, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few), ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional, intergenerational, and collective knowledge sharing, discussion and action to protect.
Call for Work
Stamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care, sustainability, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”
Eligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday, August 19, 2022 →
Eligibility
Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline
The deadline for submitting work is Friday, August 19, 2022, 5pm, EST. A selection committee composed of students, faculty, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15, 2022 - January 14, 2023.Why posters & videos?
Posters can function as catalysts for change. For generations, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking, and designed to draw attention from passersby, posters can be conversation starters, invite people to pause, reflect, spread the word, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films, recorded performances, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries, museums, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment.
Context
Stamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social, political, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.
Harlene Ellin identified her enthusiasm for communications early in her career and by activating her network of connections, she quickly found opportunities, both full-time and gigs, in a number of industries including freelance writing for the Chicago Tribune and Times, working as an interior designer, and leading communications strategy for the Women’s March Chicago and CARPLS Legal Aide. In each industry, Harlene used the skills she learned as an LSA student to align her career with causes she cared about and move the needle on issues of importance to her. From journalism to nonprofits to legal, Harlene highlights the flexibility that an LSA degree can offer, and is now coming back to campus to share her hard-earned wisdom and life lessons with current LSA students.

About Harlene:

After graduating with B.A. in English and Political Science from U-M, Harlene pursued a law degree as planned. She quickly learned that life doesn’t follow a linear path, but often includes unexpected twists and turns. After dropping out of law school, Harlene’s shifted her focus, or what she calls career “corkscrews”, to earn a M.A. from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and working as an award-winning news and feature writer for a variety of major news outlets. She also has held various communications-related positions — from public relations assistant to communications director — in both the private and non-profit sectors.

A lifelong lover of art, architecture and design, Harlene returned to school yet again. This time she earned a degree in interior design from Harrington School of Design, while raising her three children. She went on to work for several years as a residential interior designer in the Chicago area. Most recently, Harlene has been highly engaged in political activism, using her varied skill set to advance progressive causes such as abortion access, women’s rights and gun reform.

You should attend this session if you are:
- A U-M undergraduate LSA student
- Interested in journalism, writing, communications, nonprofit work, or interior design
- Exploring multiple career aspirations and interests

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Make a connection with a successful LSA alum ready to support you
- Get ideas for how to build a career when your path is not traditional
- Learn how to build your networking skills

RSVP NOW to be part of the conversation.

The Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is in a wheelchair-accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom, places to sit or stand during the event, and accessible parking options nearby. To request other accommodations please contact Sairah Husain at sairah@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.
This talk explores the relationship between religion and spatiality through a study of the emergence of transoceanic religious geography that links Southeast Asia and South Arabia. This geographic imaginary links two regions commonly regarded as “peripheral” in the study of Islam and Islamic history. Muslims from these so-called “peripheral” regions, however, have for long presented their respective homelands as spatial realizations of Islamic cosmology and as privileged sites for moral education and ethical becoming. Tracing how this transoceanic religious geography came about allows us to rethink established center-periphery models that have continued to shape our understanding of the history and geography of Islam. Instead of a Muslim world made up of unchanging centers and peripheries, the talk uncovers the existence of competing for religious geographies, shifting centers of Islam, and forms of devotional mobility with multiple directionalities. Understanding how a “peripheral” region like Southeast Asia becomes religiously central to people elsewhere (South Arabia and the Swahili coast of Africa, for example), in turn, helps us to think about comparable processes that have sustained the religious significance of other regions.

Ismail Fajrie Alatas is an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in the Department of History at New York University. His primary research interest is in Islam in the Indian Ocean world particularly, the historical and contemporary connections between Southeast Asia and South Arabia. Professor Alatas' work examines the intersections of religious authority, social formation, mobility, semiotics and communicative practice with a focus on Islamic Law, Sufism, and the Hadrami diaspora in Indonesia. He received his PhD in Anthropology and History from the University of Michigan, his MA from National University of Singapore, and his BA from the University of Melbourne.

Register at: http://myumi.ch/qA48G
Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708

*Event Details*

Heartfulness Guided Meditation
Fridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)
Join Via Zoom Meeting
Register to receive Passcode (see “Related links”

This wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.",

During his time at the UofM he was a key contributor to a number of different student organizations and programs, his favorites being the Educational Theater Company (ETC), the Center For Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS), and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). After completing his B.S.E in IOE in 2019, Justin moved out to Seattle and began working for Amazon as a business analyst on their Automated Brand Protection team. Over the last three years, he has honed his analytical skills, working across multiple teams to streamline processes, build out reporting, and generate insights that empower others to make better decisions. He is currently working to transition into a product management role which will focus on building internal tooling to improve operations.

The diverse skill set that a person receives with an IOE degree allows for a vast range of career opportunities. In this talk, Justin will focus on how his experiences in the IOE department prepared him for his current role at Amazon and how it can be used to transition into other roles as well.
Graduate students learn a number of transferable skills while completing their degree, but it’s not always clear how to use those skills outside of academia. Through the lens of her post-degree career path, Kristin will share tips for seeking employment outside of the traditional academic route and highlight opportunities to use scientific skills in government, policy, and communication. She will provide particular insight into two AAAS fellowship opportunities, the Science & Technology Policy Fellowship and the Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship.

Bio: Kristin Lewis is a project director at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Kristin leads the AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship, co-led the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors project and facilitated Communicating Science workshops. Prior to joining AAAS in 2019, Kristin supported the development of the Fourth National Climate Assessment at the U.S. Global Change Research Program and was a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at NASA. She also served as a project analyst in capital project management at Independent Project Analysis. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan, and can often be seen on her bike in the streets or trails around D.C.
",
