At their summits were a select few\u2014kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs, and covered in beads and precious metals, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning \u201cpower figure\u201d) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles, animal skin, metal, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king\u2019s physical body and minkisi. Of the three tallest mountains Wang has come up against, namely ascending Mt. Everest at age 52 in 2003, initiating an environmental protection program following his climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and studying at Harvard with limited exposure to English, he cites his time in Cambridge as the most demanding peak to scale. Wang\u2019s talk will center around his strategies for approaching and overcoming life\u2019s mountains.\r\n\r\nIn 1984, Wang Shi founded China Vanke Co., Ltd., a real estate development company. Under his leadership, Vanke has grown into one of the most successful real estate development companies in the world as well as a pioneer in China\u2019s green home construction. In addition to his role with Vanke, Wang serves as a chairman for numerous enterprises. In 2015, he was entitled \u201cThe Most Influential Entrepreneur in China\u201d by Hurun Rich List because of his great sense of social responsibility and international initiatives. He splits his spare time between philanthropy and involvement in the rowing community, serving as the chairman of the Asian Rowing Federation.\r\n\r\nMr. Wang Shi is one of the most respected business leaders in China, and it is truly an honor to welcome him to Michigan Ross.
