In this seminar, I will introduce the research and development status of these propulsion systems: 1: water ion thrusters for missions that require high specific impulse; 2: water resistojet thrusters for missions that require high and multi-directional thrusts; 3: water Hall-effect thrusters for further delta-V requirement using high-electrical power, and 4: water-metal combustion thrusters for high thrust enough for impulsive maneuvers. The first two thrusters have ongoing flight programs, and those are also introduced here. The water ion thruster is based on the design developed for xenon propellant and demonstrated in orbit in 2014 and 2015. The university spin-off company, Pale Blue, developed its demonstration model and is scheduling its launch and operation on JAXA Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-4 by early 2023. The water resistojet thruster was equipped on 6U Lunar CubeSat, EQUULEUS, which has been waiting for the launch by Artemins 1 in 2022. The other two thrusters are in the research phase and do not yet have a flight program, but here is the latest status of their research.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nHiroyuki Koizumi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Energy and Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Tokyo, Japan, where he directs the Space Propulsion Laboratory and leads the development of micro-propulsion systems for microsatellites: Hodoyoshi-4, PROCYON, AQT-D, and EQUULEUS. In 2020, he started working as CTO at the space-propulsion startup Pale Blue Inc., which was founded by him and engineers who got Ph.D. at his lab. Previously, Hiroyuki Koizumi served as an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science at JAXA from 2007 to 2011, where he was involved in Hayabusa-1 project and he was responsible for the operation of the ion engines mu-10 and the retrieval of the Hayabusa capsule at Woomera in Australia. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Keio University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Tokyo. His research interests include queueing, scheduling, financial engineering, inventory control, supply chain management, and online learning and optimization. Dr. Chao is the co-developer of Lekin Scheduling System. He is the co-author of two books, \u201cOperations Scheduling with Applications in Manufacturing and Services\u201d (Irwin\/McGraw-Hill, 1998), and \u201cQueueing Networks: Customers, Signals, and Product Form Solutions\u201d (John Wiley & Sons, 1999). Chao received the 1998 Erlang Prize from the Applied Probability Society of Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), and the 2005 David Baker Distinguished Research Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). Across development, genes collaborate to build a robust and fertile individual. Across evolution, genes accumulate adaptive DNA sequence changes that build an even more robust, and even more fertile, individual. The more robust and fertile the individual, the more copies of all these genes in the next generation. In this way, our genome\u2019s distinct genes contribute to a communal good. However, much of our DNA actually serves no beneficial function. Most of this DNA has minimal effect on our health and fertility; consequently, natural selection fails to efficiently purge it from our genome. Some of this DNA harms us. This so-called \u201cselfish DNA\u201d acts akin to viruses, hijacking our cell\u2019s machinery to make more copies of itself. While most viruses achieve evolutionary success upon transmission from one individual to another, these selfish elements achieve evolutionary success by increasing their own genomic copy number from one generation to another. When selfish elements win, the rest of the genome loses. Compromised Darwinian fitness puts evolutionary pressure on our genome to police these elements. Selfish DNA fights back with counter-adaptations, escalating a \u201cmolecular arms race.\u201d In my seminar, I will describe my lab\u2019s efforts to define the identity, molecular mechanisms, and biological consequences of such genetic conflicts between genomic hijackers and genomic guardians. To gain these insights, we generate interspecies swaps of adaptively evolving proteins that package the rapidly evolving repetitive DNA around\r\nthe telomeres and centromeres of Drosophila melanogaster. This technique, known as radio occultation (RO), can provide valuable observations of ionospheric electron density and total electron content, neutral atmospheric temperature and moisture to support space weather specification, and forecasting, weather prediction, and climate monitoring.\r\n\r\nThe joint Taiwan-U.S. COSMIC-2 mission was launched in June 2019 and has been providing approximately 6,000 profiles per day from 40N to 40S since inception. Equipped with an advanced GNSS receiver and unique antenna design, COSMIC-2 has produced high signal-to-noise ratio RO measurements that penetrate deeper into the tropical lower troposphere than any previous RO missions. His list of publications spans more pages than the average reading list for preliminary examinations in the field of German history. If one counts the presentations he has given at workshops and conferences one would assume he has lived three lives. As the organizers of this symposium in his honor, we suggest that the work of Geoff Eley deliberately evades \u201ccapture.\u201d Instead of pounding a signpost into the ground and leaving his mark, Geoff has built bridges between fields and made waves within them, touching innumerable lives and minds in the process. To ride the waves and travel across these bridges by bringing together some of the many scholars, colleagues, students, and friends that have learned with and from Geoff is the purpose of this symposium.\r\n\r\nNo Straight Lines celebrates Geoff Eley\u2019s impressive career, the breadth, range and importance of his scholarship, his spirit as a teacher, mentor and colleague, and his life-long commitment to justice, within and beyond the academy. Starting out as a scholar of German nationalism and the German political right and reframing the \u201cpeculiarities\u201d of that history as an emerging young scholar, Geoff Eley\u2019s work bore the imprint of comparative history, of thinking with concepts and theories rather than applying them, of pushing against boundaries that confine \u201cacceptable\u201d ways of thinking about the past, which he is currently putting into practice again by writing a comprehensive history of 20th Century Europe. Throughout his career, he has traced and critically reflected on how historical thinking has itself changed as a result of historical processes. No Straight Lines seeks to take stock of and celebrate the extent to which Geoff Eley\u2019s work has in fact been indispensable to the intellectual shifts he has so skillfully traced and succinctly explained.\r\n\r\nBesides celebrating the breadth and impact of Geoff Eley\u2019s scholarship, No Straight Lines seeks to remind us all of the many ways in which his work was never just theoretical but was always connected with and energized by thinkers, writers, scholars, and students, and in turn, supported and touched so many of them in lasting ways. In this regard the Saturday dinner is as crucial a part of this symposium, as is the discussion of Eley\u2019s scholarly footprint. That footprint was never purely abstract; nor was it only intellectual. Rather it continues to invigorate the many friendships and collaborations he has built and sustained over his career.
