The shadow images were then transferred to handmade paper created from invasive plant species. For Kramer the shadows speak to the fragility of threatened plants and their struggle to survive in a changing environment that includes invasive species. Its presence at UMMA today\u2014almost 7,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created, used, and valued\u2014is the result of a long and tumultuous journey, spanning a hundred years, three continents, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\r\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the \u201cbiography\u201d of the mask. Drawing on the Museum\u2019s African art collection and complemented with national loans, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask\u2019s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity.
