However, nonseparable Hamiltonians also model important problems, such as non-Newtonian mechanics and nearly integrable systems in action-angle coordinates. Unfortunately, implicit methods had been the only available symplectic approach for general nonseparable systems.\r\n This talk will describe a recent result that constructs explicit and arbitrary high-order symplectic integrators for arbitrary Hamiltonians. These integrators are based on a mechanical restraint that binds two copies of phase space together. Using backward error analysis, KAM theory, and some additional multiscale analysis, a pleasant error bound is established for integrable systems, and demonstrated on a conceptual example and the Schwarzschild geodesics problem. We focus on sewing machine operators for most of our analysis. Wages are highly regulated, with the government specifying, and our firms complying with, minimum wage rates for each operator grade level. Even in a context where the average wage of operators is only a few percentage points above minimum wage, we find that men are paid 3.4 percent more than women. Most of the gap is explained by the fact that men are more likely to be in higher operator grades. We have exceptionally detailed skills data from a subset of the factories. We show that the wage- and grade-gaps are not explained by differences in skill levels. Rather, men have higher grades even conditioning on skills. Next, we show that the higher grades are not he result of factories promoting males more often than females (they do, but the magnitude of the difference is tiny). Rather, most \u201cpromotions\u201d appear to happen when workers leave one factory and enter another factory at a higher grade. Males are more mobile than females, with average firm tenure rates across their careers that are 7 months, or 25 percent, shorter. We explore two reasons why men may be more mobile: women face higher costs of changing factories because they are juggling household responsibilities as well as work, and men have stronger incentives to be promoted because they ultimately want to be promoted into management, a path that is all but foreclosed to women. Advances in nanotechnology have intensified the need for tools that can characterize newly synthesized nano-materials. Combining scanned-probe techniques with optical illumination provides nanoscopic spatial resolution through the sharp tip (~10 nm) with the chemical recognition provided by optical spectroscopy. PiFM is a new and powerful technique which enables spectroscopic probing of nano-materials with a spatial resolution under 10 nm and broadband spectral sensitivity (optical through IR). In PiFM, the response of the optically excited sample is probed directly in the near-field by reading out the time-integrated force between the tip and the sample. Because the magnitude of the force is dependent on the photo-induced polarizability of the sample, PiFM exhibits spectroscopic sensitivity. With very high spatial resolution even under ambient conditions, PiFM enables the real-space imaging along with chemical recognition of a wide range of nano-materials, from semiconducting nanoparticles to polymer thin films to sensitive measurements of single molecules. The principles and the basic components of the PiFM will be presented with examples that highlight the nanoscale imaging and spectroscopic sensitivity inherent to the technique.
