Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\r\n\r\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States, and in Michigan, there are roughly 33,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan\u2019s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons; the impact of incarceration on women; youth incarceration; and the dangers of COVID-19.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition features artists, poets, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in, together.\r\n\r\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. SoundRocket)\r\n\r\nAs we work to adapt research designs to make use of new technologies (web and smart devices), it is also important to consider how study design and survey design may impact those who rely on assistive technology. Sections 508 (covering use of accessible information and communication technology) and 501(addressing reasonable accommodation) of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 compliance standards have been around for a long time\u2014but the survey research industry has often taken the path providing reasonable (non-technological) accommodations for study participants. These often involve alternate modes of data collection, but rarely provide a truly equitable solution for study participation. If a web-based survey is not compliant with assistive technologies, the participant may be offered the option of completing a survey with an interviewer. Survey methodologists know well that introducing a live human interaction may change how participants respond\u2014especially if the study involves sensitive topics. Imagine a workplace survey on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion where a sight-impaired employee is asked to answer questions about how they are treated in their workplace, but they are required to answer these questions through an interviewer, and not privately via a website. Not only is this request not equitable for the employee (fully sighted employees get to respond more privately), it can also bias the results if the participant is not honest about the struggle for fear of receiving backlash from their employer if the interviewer passed along their frustrations. In the act of being denied equitable participation, future decisions will then be made on potentially faulty results about the experience of such people.\r\n \r\nIn this presentation, I will focus on developing an equitable research design, partially through considering the overall study\u2014not just the technology itself. But we will also share experiences in the development of a highly accessible web-based survey that is compliant with screen reading technology (screen readers, mouse input grids, voice, keyboard navigation, etc.). I will present experimental, anecdotal, and descriptive experiences with accessible web-based surveys and research designs in higher education student, faculty, and staff surveys conducted on the topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our results will be directly relevant for inclusion and equity in these settings as well as some surprising unintended positive consequences of some of these design decisions. increased vulnerability in tissues and organ systems, leading to disease, disability, and death. The geroscience hypothesis proposes that intervention to slow or reverse accumulation of these changes can delay or prevent chronic disease and extend healthy lifespan. Animal experiments establish proof of concept for geroscience. Now, new methods to quantify the progress and pace of biological aging are opening frontiers for human translation. Quantifications of biological aging have potential to advance understanding of how genes and environments shape health across the lifespan and to guide efforts devise interventions that modify processes of aging with the goal of preventing disease. The talk will review progress in the field, introduce a new method to quantify the pace of biological aging from DNA methylation, DunedinPACE, and present results from the CALERIE randomized controlled trial, which tested effects of 2 years of calorie restriction in healthy, non-obese humans.
